Greetings,

Solomon, said in Proverbs 22:6 “Train up a child in the way he should go: and when he is old, he will not depart from it.”

Dr. William Hatcher, the founder of Fork Union Military Academy—and appropriate to be quoted today on our 123rd birthday—said, “Parents who do not provide their children with a Christian education prevent them from having the best opportunities to gain the prizes in life.” Of that he meant success in this world through a biblical worldview and also, of course,…the eternal.

Martin Luther, a German priest and theology professor asserted, "I am much afraid that schools will prove to be great gates of hell unless they diligently labor in explaining the Holy Scriptures, engraving them in the hearts of youth. I advise no one to place his child where the Scriptures do not reign paramount."

In 1642, the founders of Harvard College in the Rules and Precepts at Harvard stated, "Let every student be plainly instructed, and earnestly pressed to consider well, the main end of his life and studies is to know God and Jesus Christ which is eternal life (John 17:3) and therefore to lay Christ as the only foundation of all sound knowledge and learning."

I am proud to be the 11th president of Fork Union Military Academy on its 123rd year of existence still preaching its core values Dr. Hatcher instilled 123 years ago. We are founded on respect, integrity, faith, character and discipline. We value strengthening our body, mind and spirit.

To God be the glory for the great things He hath done. FUMA, our boys from 1898 and what you, and what we together are doing, has value, purpose and is blessed. In Jesus' name.

Colonel David L. Coggins, USMC (Ret.)
