Corps of Cadets

Curriculum

Our 7th graders start out on a more traditional schedule as they prepare to transition to the One Subject Plan. They are placed on a modified version of the program to help them properly adjust to its intensive-style study characteristic. Our 8th graders follow the One Subject Plan.

Our Upper School serves boys in grades 9 through 12, and our postgraduates. We offer a thorough program of academic classes, athletics, and extracurricular activities. The Upper School follows our unique One Subject Plan schedule.

7th Grade Curriculum

Term 1 through 4

Like the Upper School program, the 7th grade is divided into five terms of core courses, however, they operate on a more traditional schedule for the first four terms. During Terms 1-4, 7th grade cadets will take Humanities 7 and Math 7 simultaneously, rotating between two instructors until lunch each day. Following lunch, cadets attend an afternoon seminar course, which operates on a rotating basis each term. While seminar options vary from year to year, previous offerings have included Public Speaking, Health & Hygiene, Reading & Research, Woodworking, Exploratory Spanish, and Leadership. 7th grade cadets who choose to enroll in Band will take Band as their afternoon seminar for the duration of the academic year.

Term 5

During Term 5, the 7th grade will shift to a modified version of the One-Subject Plan, the purpose of which is to prepare cadets for their full-time transition to the One-Subject Plan in the 8th grade. For Term 5, 7th grade cadets will take Life Sciences 7 as their lone core subject. Like Terms 1-4, there will also be an afternoon seminar period.

8th Grade Curriculum

During the 8th grade, cadets shift to the One-Subject Plan full-time and can earn as many as three high school credits throughout the academic year. Each 8th grade cadet will be enrolled in English 8 and Civics 8 at some point during Terms 1-5, though cadets do not receive high school credit for successful completion of these courses. For the other three terms, cadets are enrolled in Upper School courses and will receive high school credit upon successful completion of these courses (though the grades issued in these course will not count towards their high school GPA). These courses typically include a combination of Earth or Environmental Science, Pre-Algebra and/or Algebra 1 (or Geometry in rare cases), a world language, or an elective course.

Upper School (Grades 9-12)

Our Upper School serves boys in grades 9 through 12, and our postgraduates. Cadets in these grades follow the One Subject Plan curriculum and are provided with extensive opportunities to further their education and skills with various academic, athletic, and extracurricular programs. Honor courses, advanced placement, and dual enrollment programs are also available and encouraged.
