On April 18, cadets from Fork Union Military Academy honored the legacy of American and Filipino soldiers of World War II by completing a 16.6-mile Bataan Death March Memorial Hike.
The annual memorial event serves as a powerful tribute to the servicemembers who endured the brutal Bataan Death March in 1942. Following the surrender of Allied forces on the Bataan Peninsula in the Philippines, approximately 75,000 American and Filipino troops were forced by Japanese forces to march more than 60 miles under extreme conditions, with little food or water. Thousands lost their lives due to exhaustion, dehydration, disease, and mistreatment, making it one of the most tragic and sobering events of World War II.
Through physical endurance and reflection, cadets gained a deeper appreciation for the sacrifice, resilience, and courage demonstrated during this harrowing chapter in history.
To personalize the experience, each cadet carried a card representing an individual servicemember from the Bataan Death March. This meaningful addition connected the physical challenge to the human stories behind the history, reminding participants that the march was not just a test of endurance, but a solemn act of remembrance.
The hike pushed cadets both mentally and physically, reinforcing the Academy’s commitment to developing young men of character through shared hardship, discipline, and purpose. Marching together as a unit, cadets demonstrated perseverance and camaraderie throughout the demanding route.
“Joseph marched 16 miles today in honor of the WWII Bataan Death March. It was a powerful display of resiliency, character, and dedication, and we are so proud of him,” said Angela Bishop, parent of Cadet Joseph Bishop and head nurse at Fork Union Military Academy. “He carried the photo of a soldier from Texas who served as a chaplain during that horrific event, which made the experience even more meaningful. A special thank you to MSgt. Cox for organizing such an impactful opportunity.”
Cadets who successfully completed the memorial hike were awarded the Bataan Death March Memorial Hike ribbon by CSM Sidwell in recognition of their accomplishment.
