Every Friday the Fork Union Military Faculty and Staff meet to nominate a few who have exceeded the standards and demonstrated superlative performance. Whilst we have various awards and recognitions - a simple "Well Done!" we hope, is also appreciated. The combination of the Bravo and Zulu nautical signal flags, i.e., Bravo Zulu, also referred to as "BZ," is a naval signal, typically conveyed by flag hoist or voice radio, meaning "Well Done" with regard to actions, operations or performance.

The following are the Bravo Zulu awards for this week:

Cadet Staff Sergeant Matthew Vinso is a junior and a first-year cadet in Alpha Company. He is a boarding student from Stafford, Va. Cadet Vinso volunteered to assist staff members in running the Social Center this past Saturday and Sunday while the Activities Director was away. He helped with the snack bar and overall operations of the Social Center. Bravo Zulu, Cadet Vinso!

Cadet Private Dominique Julius is a senior and a fourth-year cadet in Bravo Company. He is a boarding student from Philadelphia, PA. Recently, he broke the Gus Lacy Invitational Track Meet 100-meter dash record, running it in 10.68 seconds. He also beat the Long Jump Track Meet record with a 23.5 ft jump. Bravo Zulu, c/PVT Julius!

Cadet Second Lieutenant Kendall Coard is a junior and a third-year cadet in Charlie Company. He is a boarding student from Southampton, NY. This past week, Cadet Coard was chosen to receive the Charles Goodall Snead Award for demonstrating leadership in all phases of cadet life. He is currently at the US Naval Academy attending a Leadership Forum. Bravo Zulu, Cadet Coard!

Cadet Sergeant First Class Aidan Burgess is a senior and second-year cadet in Headquarters and Service Company. He is a boarding student from Fredericksburg, VA and is the Drum Major in the Fork Union Military Academy Band. Cadet Burgess has worked tirelessly to reinvigorate the band program, and this past weekend he led the band in the Apple Blossom Festival. He won Outstanding Military Drum Major for the parade, a first in many years. His hard work, dedication, and attention to detail have brought the band to a place that brings great credit to himself and Fork Union Military Academy. He has set a standard to be followed for many years to come. Bravo Zulu, Cadet Burgess!

Retan Rifles and the Fork Union Military Academy Band competed last weekend in the Apple Blossom Festival in Winchester, VA. The Apple Blossom festival hosts hundreds of entries composed of Bands, Floats, and auxiliary units. The parade is a 1.5 mile route where the cadets are not allowed to stop and rest or stop performing. The students were entered to compete against other private schools and JROTC marching units from across the east coast, and there are only two awards given for this group. Tuesday, the school received word that Fork Union Military Academy won the Outstanding Military School Band and Outstanding Military Drum Major awards, bringing home both trophies! Bravo Zulu, Retan Rifles and Band!

Mrs. Kelsey Hill, Director of College Placement and Academic Services, has spent countless hours behind-the-scenes planning for senior “Decision Day,” which took place on May 2. She took what was formerly known as “College T-shirt Day” to new heights and facilitated a day’s worth of activities that allowed our seniors to truly celebrate their college decisions and post-FUMA plans. Bravo Zulu, Mrs. Hill!

Maintenance Team is recognized for their total commitment to beautifying the campus last week for the Board of Trustees and Alumni Weekend events. From housekeeping and lawn care to event set-up and everything in between, their efforts ensure successful events. Bravo Zulu, Maintenance Team!

A special Bravo Zulu to our FUMA Moms of all generations—and to those who have the vitally important role of mothers—may God bless and keep you. We honor you and are thankful for you. Happy Mother’s Day! Bravo Zulu, FUMA Moms!

Go FUMA!
