Fork Union Military Academy is proud to announce that senior Nicholas Coleman delivered an outstanding performance at the National Civics and Debate Championship in Orlando, Florida, earning two national trophies and finishing among the top competitors in the country.

After three days of intense competition, Coleman placed eighth nationally in Legislative Debate and 12th nationally in Extemporaneous Speaking, finishing within the top 20 in both categories. His results ranked him in the top five percent of all competitors across two of the tournament’s three major events. To the Academy’s knowledge, these honors mark the first national debate recognitions in Fork Union Military Academy history.

“I could not be prouder of Nick and the team he has helped build over the past five years,” said head debate coach Michael Head. “He has grown into an exceptional leader and a self-starter who consistently puts himself and those around him in positions to succeed. Nick’s top-20 finish on the national stage is the result of preparation, focus, and a commitment to excellence.

“What speaks most powerfully to his character, however, was his response after the awards ceremony,” Head continued. “Rather than dwelling on his own accomplishments, Nick immediately turned his attention to preparing the team for the upcoming Virginia State Championship in February and motivating his teammates to pursue additional national-level opportunities. I am excited to see what this team will achieve over the remainder of the year, and I have no doubt that Nick will continue to excel as he moves into the collegiate arena this fall.”

The National Civics and Debate Championship brings together top middle school and high school competitors from across the country, testing students’ skills in research, critical thinking, public speaking, and argumentation. Coleman’s performance stood out among a highly competitive national field.

Currently serving as Fork Union Military Academy’s Battalion Commander, Coleman continues to distinguish himself not only as a campus leader, but also as a scholar and national-level competitor. His achievements reflect the Academy’s commitment to developing cadets of character who excel both inside and outside the classroom.

Fork Union Military Academy congratulates Coleman on this remarkable accomplishment and looks forward to celebrating many more academic successes in the future.
