Fork Union Military Academy congratulates ETN1(SS) John Warren and CPO/USN Jim Rooney for being named Co-Teacher of the Term for Term 3 of the 2022-2023 academic year. Cadets submit nominations for the Teacher of the Term at the conclusion of each grading term. The cadet nominations are reviewed and evaluated by the Teacher of the Term/Year Committee, which is comprised of non-academic staff members. After considering cadet nominations, the Committee announces the Teacher of the Term.

Term 3 marks the first term where there have been two teachers tied for the top votes.

Warren has been working at the Academy since 2020, starting as a TAC Officer in the Commandants Department. In August of 2021, the 2009 alumnus was named Band Director and now teaches exploratory music to seventh graders, seventh grade band, honors band and upper school band.

For Term 3, Warren taught upper school band, honors band and seventh grade band.

ETN1(SS) Warren received nominations that stated:

“Petty Officer Warren has by far been the best teacher inside the band room and outside the band room, by showing the true meaning of being a teacher who cares about their students and even those who are not. Since last year, Petty Officer Warren has been working on the band in which he started with only eight cadets and now this year the band has at least 50 cadets. The band has been to three different parades, winning one, and the honors band went to the governor's mansion twice. He works hard to expand the band more by recruiting new band members. Inside the band room, he works one on one with each cadet with music or anything they need help with, but also, he holds CQ twice a week if we have a B- or below in our One Subject Plan class. All these things show how devoted Petty Officer Warren is to make a difference at FUMA.”

“I nominate Petty Officer Warren as Teacher of the Term because of his unmatched care for his students. He stays extremely late into the night in order to make sure that the band is functioning and doing well. He works with each student individually and always cares for his students.”

“Petty Officer Warren cares and shows passion for his music and band students. He is someone we can rely on to help us for anything. Although, sometimes he annoys me, he sets the standard and disciplines me to help me become a better cadet. I can tell all he cares about is to make the school better and he starts with his band kids to set the example.”

Sharing the Teacher of the Term honor with Warren is CPO/USN Rooney.

CPO/USN Rooney is in his 16th year at the Academy. Rooney arrived in 2006 to teach in the Foreign Language Department. Outside of the classroom, Rooney has coached soccer and basketball.

For Term 3, Rooney taught German 3.

CPO/USN Rooney received nominations that stated:

“CPO/USN Rooney is a great teacher who has a great understanding of curriculum and willingness to help cadets with work. He engages with the class and has a mixture of "old school" teaching style with an approachable manor. He has never been nominated for Teacher of the Term and I believe he deserves recognition since he's has been part of the faculty for over 10 years.”

“CPO/USN Rooney always has a lot of energy. He helps me out a lot. He is funny but serious and is just overall a good teacher.”

Congratulations, ETN1(SS) Warren & CPO/USN Rooney!
