Fork Union Military Academy welcomed Lee Mitchell, Executive Director of Needle’s Eye Ministries in Richmond, Virginia, to campus Thursday morning as part of its ongoing Christian Leadership Series.
Established by Academy trustee David Barrett, the Christian Leadership Series invites accomplished Christian leaders to share their personal faith journeys and leadership insights with the Corps of Cadets. These conversations are designed to strengthen cadets’ spiritual development and reinforce the Academy’s mission of building young men of character and purpose.
During his message, Mitchell shared the personal journey that shaped his relationship with God. Reflecting on his early years, he recalled discovering one of his favorite Bible verses at just 12 years old, Psalm 138:8: “The Lord will fulfill His purpose for me.” While the verse resonated deeply, Mitchell admitted that fully understanding his calling took time.
That clarity began to take shape in his early twenties through a pivotal and unexpected moment with a mentor. As Mitchell began exploring his involvement with Needle’s Eye Ministries, his mentor told him, “Lee, you’re the biggest waste of talent I’ve ever seen.”
Though initially offended, Mitchell soon realized the deeper meaning behind those words. The statement challenged him to recognize that he did, in fact, have talent and that someone cared enough to speak hard truth into his life. That moment became a turning point, emphasizing the importance of accountability, growth, and surrounding oneself with people willing to speak honestly.
That message strongly resonated with Fork Union Military Academy, where cadets are supported daily by faculty, staff, and peers who serve as mentors and “truth tellers” by guiding them toward personal and spiritual growth.
Mitchell also encouraged cadets to simplify their relationship with God. Rather than overcomplicating faith with expectations and checklists, he emphasized a foundational truth: God simply desires a relationship. “Spend time with Him,” Mitchell shared, reminding cadets that faith begins with presence, not perfection.
He concluded with a powerful reminder that God is living and ever-present, encouraging cadets to open their hearts and invite Him into their lives.
The Academy looks forward to continuing the Christian Leadership Series, highlighting voices of faith, perseverance, and leadership that inspire and shape the lives of its cadets.
