FORK UNION, VA – Chrysander Alden Rahardjo (Alden), an incoming sophomore from Auckland Grammar School for Boys in Auckland, New Zealand, has been named the winner of the 2022-2023 Board of Trustees Scholarship at the historic Fork Union Military Academy, the prestigious college preparatory boarding school for boys located in central Virginia.

Alden is the son of Yanuar Rahardjo (Ian) and Marcia Lisanto and resides in Auckland, New Zealand. An avid learner, Alden aspires to attend college at one of the top engineering schools like Virginia Tech, California Institute of Technology or MIT to become an engineer in computer technology. Very detailed oriented and creative, Alden has had an interest in building with his hands at an early age. Most recently, Alden helped his robotics team win first place in the Senior Theatre category in the regional competition in Auckland in August of 2019. He also won second place in the New Zealand National Robotic Competition in the same category in September of 2019.

Alden is also a very good runner and swimmer and loves to play the drums and guitar. Alden hopes to join robotics, woodworking and rifle at the Academy this year. He is currently working on making architectural models, including the Eiffel Tower and the Leaning Tower of Pisa to exhibit in next year’s Art Exhibition in Auckland, New Zealand.

Fork Union Military Academy received dozens of applications in recent months from high-quality candidates all around the nation and world for this single coveted scholarship award.

The Board of Trustees Scholarship provides full tuition, room and board, and uniforms for a rising eighth, ninth or 10th-grader until their graduation from Fork Union, provided they maintain required academic and conduct standards.

The Scholarship Committee reviewed these applications and narrowed the candidates to a list of three semi-finalists, each of whom were conducted through Zoom with the selection committee for individual interviews in April.

Competition for this year’s scholarship was especially close, with many well-qualified candidates. School officials say they are hopeful that they will be able to provide sufficient financial aid and access scholarship support to help enroll several of the other high-performing students who sought this highly competitive scholarship.

Fork Union Military Academy is a private boarding and day school for boys in grades 7 through 12, with a one-year postgraduate program as well.

Structured as an independent military-style environment, the school uses the best aspects of the military system to teach young men responsibility, self-discipline, leadership, respect for themselves and others, and the value of setting and achieving high standards.
