The Fork Union Military Academy Band and Retan Rifles Drill Team proudly represented the Academy and the Commonwealth of Virginia in the 2025 National Memorial Day Parade in Washington, D.C., marking a powerful and patriotic conclusion to the school year.

Led by Music Director ETN1(SS) John M. Warren, USN (Ret.), the group traveled to the nation’s capital to participate in one of the country's most prominent tributes to America’s fallen heroes. With their instruments polished and uniforms pressed, Fork Union cadets marched with strength, pride, and reverence down Constitution Avenue in front of thousands of spectators and a global broadcast audience.

“This past weekend was one of the most meaningful and proud experiences I’ve had the honor of leading,” said Warren. “Our cadets didn’t just perform, they honored. They demonstrated excellence, dignity, and a deep sense of purpose.”

The cadets’ journey began on campus, performing at the Academy’s 127th Commencement Ceremony for the graduating Class of 2025. From there, the group spent the weekend preparing, bonding, and visiting historic sites, including a moving tour of Arlington National Cemetery, where they witnessed the solemn Changing of the Guard at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier.

“That moment silenced even the most talkative cadet,” Warren said. “It reminded us all why we were there. This parade was more than just a performance, it was a testament to discipline, brotherhood, and patriotism.”

On parade day, cadets stood in formation under the sun for hours, waiting to take their place in the lineup. The anticipation only deepened their resolve. When they finally turned onto Constitution Avenue, it was a defining moment, one that reflected months of hard work, dedication, and unity.

“Watching our cadets march, knowing the hours they spent in rehearsal and the miles they had marched in preparation, my heart swelled with pride,” said Warren. “Shoulders back and heads high, they were ready, and they were exceptional.”

Particularly moving for Warren and many observers was the presence of the Academy’s recent graduates. Seniors who had already received their diplomas chose to return and complete their journey alongside their bandmates.

“These seniors didn’t just march they led,” Warren said. “They chose to stand with their brothers one last time. They leave behind a legacy of excellence and selfless service to the band they helped shape.”

Among those recognized were:

  • Cadet Major Joseph Athey, Drum Major, whose four years of leadership set the standard for the band.
  • Cadet Moses Rattin, a steady and loyal presence on the snare drum.
  • Cadet Bowo Immanuel, a talented alto saxophonist known for his musical energy.
  • Cadet Niv Patel, a clarinetist who led by quiet example and dedication.

The weekend was made possible through the support of numerous faculty chaperones and the trust of Academy families who allowed their sons to remain on campus after graduation to participate in this momentous occasion.

“To the parents and families, thank you,” Warren added. “Your sons stood tall on a national stage and honored the memory of America’s fallen heroes with every step they took.”

Fork Union Military Academy is proud of the cadets who represented the institution with such poise, respect, and honor, and is grateful for their extraordinary performance at a time when patriotism and unity are needed more than ever.
