Fork Union Military Academy congratulates Dr. Michael Jasper on being named Teacher of the Term for Term 1 of the 2023-2024 academic year. Jasper, who taught PVCC English 111 (College Composition) during Term 1, joined the FUMA Faculty in the Summer of 2022 as an English instructor. Outside of the classroom, he assists the Academy with PG basketball, Scale Modeler's Club, swimming and diving and rifle.

Jasper is a 1986 graduate of University of South Carolina where he earned his B.A. in English. Three years later, Jasper earned his M.A. in British Literature with the Gamecocks. Following his time at USC, Jasper earned his Ph.D. in British Literature from Kent State University. Prior to Fork Union, Jasper spent time teaching at high schools in South Carolina and Florida, as well as stops at universities, including University of Maryland, Elizabeth City State University and the New York Institute of Technology.

Cadets submit nominations for the Teacher of the Term at the conclusion of each grading term. The cadet nominations are reviewed and evaluated by the Teacher of the Term/Year Committee, which is comprised of non-academic staff members. After considering cadet nominations, the Committee announces the Teacher of the Term.

Dr. Jasper received nominations that stated:

• "He provides great lessons that are carefully worded and enter twined with modern day things students can relate to. He involves everyone in discussion and goes out of his way to form a teacher/mentor relationship with every student. He holds us students to high standards, pushing us past the minimum and making us all better writers."
• "Dr. Jasper has no question been the best teacher I've ever had. He always goes out of his way to make sure the assignment directions are punctual and easy to understand. His experience in writing and feedback has allowed me to grow as a writer extremely and I have learned more about writing in the last 7 weeks then I have my whole academic career.
• "Dr. Jasper has been the perfect teacher to introduce me to FUMA. He has taught me lessons applicable both in the classroom and out, preparing me for college and beyond. I feel that he perfectly embodies FUMA's mission to make better men out of his students."
