Fork Union Military Academy’s College Placement Department, led by Mrs. Kelsey Hill, continued its commitment to preparing cadets for life after the Academy with a recent visit to the Virginia Military Institute on March 24.

Nine cadets participated in the trip, including two postgraduates currently in the recruitment process (one in basketball and one in lacrosse), two appointed seniors, and five juniors. The visit provided a valuable opportunity for cadets to experience firsthand the academic, military, and cultural environment of one of the nation’s premier senior military colleges.

CPT Noah Ahrens accompanied the group as a chaperone, returning to his alma mater and offering personal insight into life at VMI. The group also had the opportunity to meet his sister, Tess Ahrens, a current VMI Keydet, further enhancing the cadets’ understanding of the VMI experience.

Following lunch, the two postgraduate cadets met with coaches and toured athletic facilities, while the remainder of the group participated in a guided tour of post. Cadets attended an informative presentation led by Capt. Regina Allison, who shared VMI’s rich history, current initiatives, and future direction. A question-and-answer session followed before the group reported to Crozet Hall for a traditional VMI meal.

During lunch, cadets had the unique opportunity to connect with Capt. Ethan Hybl, the admissions representative for Central Virginia who is responsible for reviewing many of their applications. This face-to-face interaction provided valuable insight into the admissions process and allowed cadets to ask thoughtful questions about their futures.

The visit continued with a tour of the VMI Museum, where cadets explored the Institute’s storied past, including its role in the Battle of New Market. They also learned how today’s Corps of Cadets continues to honor those who came before them.

The College Placement Department remains dedicated to providing cadets with meaningful college exploration opportunities. Visits like these play a critical role in helping cadets determine what they value in a college experience academically, socially, and personally.

Fork Union encourages cadets to take full advantage of these opportunities. Juniors are permitted up to two excused academic days for official college visits, while seniors are allowed up to three excused days as they finalize their post-secondary plans.
