The College Placement Department at Fork Union Military Academy is committed to providing cadets with valuable exposure to college and university life. Every Tuesday during the spring semester, the department hosts college visits for interested juniors, seniors, and postgraduates who have applied or been accepted to the respective schools. These voluntary trips offer cadets the opportunity to experience college classes, meet faculty and staff, and explore campus life firsthand.
To participate, cadets must register in advance through a signup link and receive permission from all three departments: academics, athletics, and the Commandant’s Department. These trips are strictly for cadets, allowing them to engage in the college selection process independently.
This week, 11 cadets, including three seniors and seven juniors, traveled to Hampden-Sydney College for an immersive campus visit. The cadets had the unique opportunity to attend a 90-minute college class, with half of the group sitting in on a Rhetoric course and the other half attending a history course. Following their academic experience, the cadets met with Dr. Richard Pantele, Dean of Students, who provided insights into Hampden-Sydney’s culture and student life, answering questions along the way. The visit continued with a guided campus and dormitory tour, and cadets concluded their trip with lunch in Hampden-Sydney’s dining facility, courtesy of the college.
Throughout the spring, the College Placement Department will continue its college visit series, with upcoming trips to:
The department structured these visits based on cadet interest, gathering input from juniors to determine which schools to include in the schedule.
Families are encouraged to discuss these opportunities with their cadets. If interested, cadets must sign up directly to participate.
These visits provide an invaluable glimpse into college life, helping cadets make informed decisions about their future academic and career paths.
