Fork Union Military Academy is proud to be hosting the 25th annual running of the Gus Lacy Track Classic this Saturday, April 13th, beginning at 10:00 AM. The venue for this historic track meet is different for this year, however. The Gus Lacy Track Classic will be held this year at Louisa County High School in Mineral, Virginia.
"The Gus Lacy Track Classic is now on its 25th edition," explains Coach Winston Brown, Fork Union's head coach of the Track & Field program. "The event was created by Coach Hardy and I to dedicate the then new Gus Lacy Track. The meet was hit! Combing a great track with a wonderful and exciting setting. The record book for the meet speaks to the importance the event quickly established. In recent years as the facility has begun to age the attendance has also waned. The event is counted on by the central Virginia community and beyond. I wanted badly for this meet to continue but I also want what’s best for the athletes. We really had no choice."
The track surface is showing the significant wear of so many large and successful events through the years since it was originally built.
"We are currently raising funds to replace the track with a facility that will not only allow us to return to hosting FUMA, Prep League, and State championship meets, but also be suitable for national level competitions," states Fork Union's Director of Advancement, Tripp Billingsley. He adds, "Donations may be made at https://www.forkunion.com/giving and should be designated for the Lacy Outdoor Track."
Each of the events at the Gus Lacy Track Classic are held in honor of a past Fork Union athlete. This year's honorees are:
The longest standing meet record at the Gus Lacy Track Classic was set back in 2001 in the Boys 400 by Ford Atlee with a time of 48.50.
