Summer Update for Fall Enrollment:

July 25, 2025

Dear Parents,

As you are preparing for your cadet's arrival to Fork Union Military Academy next month, we want to highlight the importance of completing your son's SchoolDoc health forms and introduce the dedicated professionals in our Infirmary who help keep our cadets healthy throughout the school year.

Complete Your SchoolDocs Forms

All health records at Fork Union Military Academy are managed through SchoolDoc, a secure, web-based platform. You should have received an invitation via email to access and complete your cadet's health profile. If you have not received this email, please contact the Infirmary right away at infirmary@fuma.org

Please note:

If you have any questions about SchoolDoc or your cadet's health records, please call us at 434-842-4310 or email infirmary@fuma.org

Meet Your Infirmary Staff:

Our Infirmary team is here to care for and support your son throughout the school year:

Frequently Asked Questions

How are prescriptions and refills handled?
Fork Union Military Academy partners with Fork Union Pharmacy, conveniently located near campus. Prescriptions and refills are sent directly to the pharmacy and picked up by our staff. Medications are billed to your insurance, and any applicable co-pays will be charged to your FACTS account. You may also choose to mail your son's prescription directly to the Academy. Please be aware that postal delays can occur, so plan accordingly. As a courtesy, we do our best to notify you when your son is running low on his medication, but we recommend setting a reminder on your phone as a backup.

If your son's medication or dosage changes during the school year, please notify us as soon as possible. We'll send you a form for the prescribing physician to complete, which can be returned via fax or email.

What happens when my son gets sick?
Our Infirmary team provides care using a wide range of over-the-counter medications to manage minor symptoms. If your son develops a fever or needs to be admitted to the infirmary, you will be notified via phone or email. For illnesses that arise overnight, we will contact you the following morning.

What happens if there is an emergency?
If your son can be safely transported by car, a staff member or school transporter will accompany him to receive care. If not, we will call 911 and he will be transported by ambulance. In all cases, a staff member will remain with your son, and you will be notified immediately.

What if my son needs to see the doctor?
Dr. Landford, our Academy physician, is on campus Monday through Friday to evaluate cadets as needed. There is no additional cost. This service is included in your tuition. If your son is seen by Dr. Landford, a nurse will contact you by phone or email with details about the visit and any recommendations.

Tests
The Infirmary provides a variety of routine medical tests, including Rapid Strep and Flu tests, throat and wound cultures, standard blood work, and drug screenings. If additional testing is needed, please contact the Infirmary to discuss available options.

Please note: As part of our commitment to student wellness and maintaining a safe, healthy school environment, the Academy will conduct periodic standard drug screenings throughout the year beginning upon arrival. These screenings are intended to support and uphold our community standards.

What can my son have in his room?
Depending on this grade level, your son may be allowed to keep allergy medications and vitamins in his room. However, all medications must be first approved and routed through the infirmary. If your son is not permitted to keep over-the-counter medications in his room, we will store them, labeled and accessible, in the infirmary. He can come and take them as needed.

What about supplements?
Supplements are not permitted on campus. If any are received on campus, they will be held at the infirmary and must be picked up by an adult. They could also be mailed home.

Inhalers, EpiPens & Injections
We strongly recommend that your son bring two inhalers to campus, one to carry with him and one to keep in the infirmary. This ensures he always has access, including during athletics or activities if he forgets his in his room.

If your son is prescribed an EpiPen, please be sure he brings it with him to campus. EpiPens travel with your son whenever he leaves campus for sporting events or trips. Both inhalers and EpiPens will be returned to you at the end of the school year.

The infirmary can administer injections such as allergy shots and growth hormone treatments under the supervision of a nurse. If your son requires regular injections during the school year, please contact us directly to discuss the details and make arrangements.

We understand this may be a lot of information to take in, and we're here to help every step of the way. Please don't hesitate to reach out with any questions or concerns.

Sent on behalf of Music Director ETN1(SS) John Warren:

Dear Parents,

My name is Petty Officer John Warren, and I have the honor of serving as the Music Director at Fork Union Military Academy. Over the past year, our music program has experienced tremendous growth, and this fall, we are excited to welcome even more cadet musicians into the band!

If your son currently plays or has ever played an instrument, I encourage you to email me as soon as possible. I’m finalizing my class roster and want to ensure each cadet is prepared when they arrive on campus.

Band at FUMA is an enriching experience for brass, woodwind, and percussion players. Our focus is on marching in parades and performing at events both on and off campus. This year, we’re scheduled to perform in:

Cadets will also have the opportunity to audition for Honors Band events at regional colleges and even at Carnegie Hall in February. These experiences can open doors to college scholarships that many students don’t realize are available. In fact, 70% of our Class of 2024 musicians are continuing their musical journey in college alongside degrees in fields like business and engineering.

No prior experience? No problem!
We welcome beginners, and our schedule allows cadets to participate in both band and athletics. Whether your cadet is interested in the drumline, brass section, or woodwinds, we’ll provide a space for them to grow.

Instruments typically played in the band include:

BrassWoodwindPercussion
TrumpetClarinetSnare drum
TromboneFluteBass drum
BaritonePiccoloMulti-Toms
Tuba/Sousaphone (Bass or Treble Clef)Alto SaxophoneCymbals
French Horn/mellophoneTenor SaxophoneBells/Xylophone***
Baritone SaxophoneAuxiliary percussion instruments
*** If your son plays the piano or keyboard, this is a great way to expand their musicianship and opens up more scholarship opportunities.

If your cadet is interested, please reply to this email with the following information:

Name, Grade, Instrument, and Years of Experience.

If you’d simply like more details about music opportunities at Fork Union, I’d be happy to answer any questions!

I look forward to another fantastic year of music at Fork Union Military Academy and to welcoming your son to our growing band family.

Warmest regards,

ETN1(SS) John M. Warren, USN (Ret.) Music Director Fork Union Military Academy
