Frequently Asked Questions

Need-Based Financial Aid

What is FACTS?

Fork Union Military Academy has partnered with FACTS Tuition Management to collect need-based financial aid applications and to manage tuition payments. FACTS is a well-respected financial services provider that works with over 11,500 schools across the nation.

The application for financial aid is hosted by FACTS and they collect all of the information needed and provide us with their impartial evaluation of your financial aid need. Ultimately, Fork Union Military Academy decides the amount of any financial aid and scholarship grants that may be offered.

Who can I contact if I have questions about financial aid or the financial aid application process?

The person on our staff who handles financial aid and works closely with families is LTC Steven McCoy. Steve is our Deputy Chief of Staff assigned to the President's Office, which demonstrates just how important we believe financial aid is in helping as many families as possible enroll at Fork Union.

Steve has had a long history at Fork Union. He has served as a teacher in the classroom for many years, and has also been active as a coach in sports such as football and track. He knows the school, he knows our cadets, and he is known for building strong relationships with the families who come to Fork Union Military Academy. He has two advanced degrees in education and was recently awarded a Master's Degree in Educational Administration. He was promoted to Deputy Chief of Staff in 2019 and continues to build an outstanding reputation as one who is passionate about the school and committed to our cadets and ensuring they reach their full potential here.

We encourage you to reach out to LTC McCoy and raise any questions or concerns you might have about the financial aid process. He can best be reached by email at and he is committed to responding promptly back to you by email or phone.

Can I apply for financial aid before we complete the application for admission?

We encourage families to complete both the application for admission and the application for financial aid at the same time, because we are unable to make an offer of financial aid to a family until the student has been accepted for admission first.

We know that some families may want to understand the financial commitment to the Academy to see if they can afford to enroll their student at Fork Union, before going through the admissions process. Families may apply for financial aid and discuss financial aid possibilities with our admissions and financial aid staff prior to your student's acceptance. You will not receive a formal award for financial aid if the student has not yet been accepted for admission.

Is there a deadline to apply for financial aid?

Yes. New families seeking to enter in the fall should submit their application for financial aid by June 15th to be eligible to participate in the 10-month payment plan, or by July 15th to be eligible to participate in the 9-month payment plan.

Does the amount of financial aid needed impact my son's chances of being accepted for admission?

No. Financial aid considerations have no bearing on our decision to accept a student for admission. The decision to accept a student for admission depends entirely on his strength as a student, and on the abilities, talents, and qualities he would bring to our Corps of Cadets.

Is information about financial aid applications and awards kept confidential?

Yes, need-based financial aid information is kept confidential and is not discussed with any persons outside of those directly involved in the decision process. Classroom teachers, for example, have no information as to who in their classroom is receiving financial aid and who is not.

When will we be notified if we have received a financial aid award for my son?

After you fill out and submit your application for financial aid, you next need to upload certain documents and tax forms as requested so that the financial information you have provided can be verified. It can take up to 14 days for FACTS to complete the verification process. Once your application has been verified by FACTS, we can then review your application and put together a financial aid proposal. This typically may take us up to 5 business days.

So, you can expect to receive a response from us within about 3 weeks after you have uploaded your documentation for verification.

Keep in mind, however, that we do not make any offer of financial aid until after the student has been accepted for admission. It is okay to apply for financial aid, and even to discuss financial aid possibilities with our admissions and financial aid staff prior to your student's acceptance. But you will not receive a formal proposal for a financial aid grant if the student has not yet been accepted for admission.

Are financial aid awards renewed each year automatically?

No. We require families to reapply for financial aid each year. However, if there are no substantial changes in a family's situation, it is reasonable to expect that the aid will be renewed each year. Changes in a family's financial situation could result in an increase or decrease in the aid amount granted, depending on individual circumstances. We do expect that students continue to be in good standing to qualify for financial aid, meaning that financial, academic, or behavioral factors could each have an impact on the continuation and amount of any financial aid.

Who is responsible for completing the FACTS form in the case of separated or divorced parents and in cases of legal guardianship?

We will need to receive information from anyone who will be financially responsible for the student's enrollment. If you have questions about your family's specific circumstances, feel free to reach out to LTC Steven McCoy by email at and seek his guidance. He is our staff member who will be responsible for reviewing your financial aid application and he can tell you what information he will need.

Fork Union Military Academy accepts qualified applicants regardless of race, religion, or national origin, and does not discriminate unlawfully in the administration of its educational policies, scholarship and loan programs, or other school programs. Requests for financial aid are not considered in connection with any admission decision.
