Fork Union’s Summer Academy College Prep students recently visited Hampden-Sydney College to gain firsthand experience with the college visit process and prepare for their own college searches.

Scott Teachey, Hampden-Sydney’s admissions representative for the Central Virginia area, led the students on a campus tour and shared valuable advice about how college visits are structured, what prospective students should observe, and which questions they should ask during a tour.

The visit served as a practical extension of the students’ classroom work. Before traveling to campus, the rising juniors researched Hampden-Sydney, developed thoughtful questions, and learned more about what college admissions offices look for in an application.

The small-group setting gave the students an opportunity to engage directly with an admissions professional, explore a college campus, and build confidence as they begin considering their own college options.

The students also demonstrated Fork Union’s values during an unexpected moment of service. While visiting the library, they noticed two members of Hampden-Sydney’s ELITE program carrying a large load of boxes. The three cadets immediately offered to help transport the boxes to the members’ vehicles, earning their gratitude and recognition.

The visit provided an important introduction to the college search process while allowing the students to demonstrate the character, initiative, and willingness to serve that define the Fork Union experience.
