Weekly Update for February 2, 2024

Greetings from Fork Union Military Academy!

We invite you to read the latest issue of the Front & Center, our campus newsletter, available below. Don't forget to scroll down for the weekly updates.

The Front & Center - February 2, 2024

New Information for the Week:

Below you will find all the new information that has been added this week.

DAY STUDENT REMINDER:

On Friday during Commandant's Call, the cadets were informed that the Uniform of the Day will be Winter Class B Uniforms all week next week. All cadets are required to wear their Winter Class B Uniforms Monday, February 5 through Friday, February 9 to ensure that all cadets have their appropriate Class B uniform items as we get closer to the parade season.

Last week, there were numerous discrepancies with this uniform, so the Commandant would like to ensure that cadets have ample opportunity to wear it appropriately and that we have an appropriate amount of time to correct these deficiencies.

WINTER LEAVE WEEKEND - FEBRUARY 9-12

Next weekend (Friday, February 9 through Monday, February 12), is Winter Leave. We are encouraging all cadet families that are departing campus to submit their Leave Requests in Orah by Monday, February 5. This will allow us to properly plan for how many cadets we will have on campus throughout the weekend.

Making It Through "The Dark Ages"

January and February tend to be "gloomy" months for cadets. I was reminded today that alumni from some years ago used to refer to this time of the year as "The Dark Ages." The fun of the holidays is over, the weather can be cold or even icy, and it feels like a long time between Christmas Leave and Spring Break. Even our happiest of cadets can become a bit whiny and out of sorts during the sunlight-reduced days of wintertime.

Can I make a suggestion?

Order Cadet Care Packages

Ms. Rhonda White, our Coordinator of Assessments & Student Records, provides parents with the opportunity to treat their cadet with something sweet and special. Do you want to do something special to surprise your cadet while at FUMA? Treat him to a birthday surprise, a pick-me-up, or "just because" treat from the list below.

  • Qty of 6 Cupcakes for $10
  • Qty of 12 Cupcakes for $20
  • Qty of 12 Brownies for $10
  • Qty of 12 Chocolate Chip Cookies for $12
  • Medium Size Gift Bag of Treats for $25
  • Large Size Gift Bag of Treats for $40

Junior Workshop - Spring 2024

Our College Placement and Academic Services team will be hosting the Junior Workshop in Terms 4 and 5. The sessions will be held on Mondays and Wednesdays and the program is structured to help cadets in 11th grade prepare for the upcoming college applications process, provide SAT Test preparation, and will offer visits to nearby colleges.

There will be 23 sessions in total and the cost is only $345 for the entire workshop series. To put that cost in perspective, SAT Test Prep alone can cost anywhere from $50 to $150 per session and that is just for SAT Test Prep with no college prep. Our program at $345 breaks down to just $15 per session!

You must register your cadet by February 9th to allow him to participate in the Junior Workshop. No late registrations will be accepted after February 9th. You may register at this link: https://forms.office.com/r/N5dymb851M

If you have any questions, please contact Kelsey Hill, our Director of College Placement and Academic Services, at 434-842-4272 or by email at .

Costa Rica, Here We Come!

Spring Break Travel Opportunity for Cadets

Fork Union Military Academy is partnering with Rustic Pathways to arrange an exciting travel and learning opportunity for our cadets during Spring Break, from March 9 - 16, 2024. Cadets will learn all about turtle conservation and work to protect native sea turtles on the Nicoya Peninsula of Costa Rica. They will spend the days both enjoying the beach and working to keep it clean, helping protect the turtles during evening patrols spent looking for nests to relocate to safety. Experienced conservationists will lead our young men through service and teach them about the many ongoing efforts to save sea turtles. In addition to these daily shifts in the hatchery, they willcarry out beach cleanups with park rangers and marvel at the beautiful beaches.

Did you know FUMA has Company Facebook Groups?

The Commandant's Department works hard with each company to provide a private Facebook Group for Alpha, Bravo and Charlie Companies. These groups are great ways to interact with the company TAC Officer, network with families and see candid photos for your cadet.

If you have not joined your cadet's Facebook group, you can find the links below:

Diploma Preparations for Seniors

It's hard to believe it's time to start thinking about your cadet's graduation and the emotions when you see him walk across that stage and receive his diploma. We want to make sure we have the correct name and spelling on his diploma, so we are asking you to please verify by emailing Ms. Rhonda White at  before January 8th with the correct name and spelling to be printed on his diploma so we can get them ordered by the deadline. If you have any questions, please reach out to Ms. White.
