We would like to share our updated transportation policy for Fork Union Military Academy. This year, we have implemented new guidelines to ensure the safety of our cadets, especially those traveling as unaccompanied minors.
Special Requirements for Unaccompanied Minors
What is an Unaccompanied Minor? Cadets traveling by airline without their parents may be considered "unaccompanied minors" depending on their age and may require an adult chaperone to accompany them to and from the gate. Individual airlines have their own policies regarding the age at which a child is considered an "unaccompanied minor."
Transportation Services for Unaccompanied Minors: Unaccompanied minors must depart and arrive only from the Lynchburg VA Airport (LYH). We are unable to provide transportation services for unaccompanied minors to or from any other location.
Please note: Lynchburg VA Airport (LYH) only services American Airlines. American Airlines' policy allows unaccompanied minors on connecting flights through Charlotte NC Airport (CLT). LYH is a regional carrier service provided by American Airlines through CLT. If you are unable to fly with American and need to use a different airport, you must request Private Hire Transportation. Private Hire Transportation for unaccompanied minors to Dulles Airport (IAD) will be a $434 charge. Private Hire Transportation for unaccompanied minors to Richmond Airport (IAD) will be a $284 charge.
Cost of Chaperone Services for Unaccompanied Minors: If your cadet requires an adult chaperone, an additional $34 will be added to the cost of transportation.
TSA PreCheck: Unaccompanied minors must obtain TSA PreCheck to ensure a smooth pick-up and drop-off experience.
Advance Notice Required for Chaperone Service: Please email transportation@fuma.org at least 21 days prior to the departure/arrival time of an unaccompanied minor to arrange chaperone service.
Shuttle Transportation for Leaves: We offer shuttle transportation to various locations for leaves. Shuttles depart campus at 1:00 PM on leave days, with arrivals planned for train or flight departure times of 4:00 PM or later.
Costs and Locations for Shuttle Transportation:
Private Hire Transportation to Travel Hubs: We can provide private hire transportation to a specific location outside of our regularly-scheduled shuttle transportation. This is available at the costs stated below. The cost for private hire transportation is per use (departure or return).

Please note: The associated costs to Charlottesville, Richmond, and Lynchburg are for 3 hours of service (or 6 hours of service to DCA or IAD). If the trip exceeds this amount of time, the rate will increase by $17 per extra hour.
