Updated on January 29, 2021
Inclement winter weather is expected in the Sunday, January 31, 2021 through Monday, February 1, 2021 timeframe.
By order of the Academic Dean, the below 9AM Class Day schedule will be implemented for Monday, February 1, 2021.
Safety is always our first priority for our cadets, and we have implemented the below policy and procedures to deal with the hazardous weather conditions that the winter season brings.
Day Students are Still Expected to Attend Class
In the event of inclement weather, all day students are expected to attend class and should make arrangements with their respective TAC Officer and teacher as described below if hazardous traveling conditions exist or are expected.
To be clear, day students at Fork Union Military Academy are NOT subject to the Fluvanna County school system's "snow day" delays or cancellations. They must be in class as expected.
Inclement Weather in the Time of COVID-19
While in years past our first preference would have been that day students stay on campus in the barracks in the event of hazardous road conditions, due to our COVID-19 mitigation protocols, we have modified our options for day students dealing with inclement weather, as described below, to place virtual class attendance via distance education as our first option for day students. We have also prepared for potential class day schedule delay/modification if needed. All of these options are described below.
Optional Delayed Start - 9AM Class Day Schedule
In the event of hazardous weather impacting travel conditions, our Academic Dean may order a 9AM Class Day, modifying our class day schedule to begin class at 9:00 AM. For those needing to travel to campus, including our faculty, the delayed start may give an extra margin of safety. Here is the modified 9AM Class Day schedule we will follow, should the Academic Dean order that it be used.
Day Student Option #1: Virtual Class Attendance
Day students may remain home during inclement weather and attend class in real time, synchronously with their classmates, via distance education methods. Day students are asked to notify both their TAC Officer and their teacher by email that they will be selecting this option.
Day Student Option #2: Stay on Campus in the Barracks
Day students who wish to stay on campus due to inclement weather should call the Commandant's Department at 434-842-4232 to reserve a room.
If a day student decides to stay on campus, he must stay in the barracks. Day student cadets will be assigned a room by their TAC Officer. Bed sheets and a pillowcase will be supplied. During their stay, all meals will be provided in the dining hall.
Day students staying on campus are expected to adhere to all rules and regulations in the barracks (i.e., CQ or study hall, no cell phones, lights out, etc.).
Pack a Bag
It is recommended that day student cadets who drive to campus keep a packed bag in their vehicle in the event of winter weather. Day students should have the following recommended supplies for an overnight stay in the barracks:
Uniform items for the following day
Blanket and pillow
PT uniform - t-shirt and shorts
Sweatshirt and sweatpants
Tennis shoes and socks
Underwear and white t-shirt
Towel and washcloth
Soap or body wash
Toothbrush and toothpaste
Brush or comb
Day Student Option #3: Travel Safely to Campus
Day students who can manage safe travel to campus during inclement weather may attend classes as usual.
Please contact the Commandant's Department at 434-842-4232 or you may email our Commandant or Deputy Commandant at the below email addresses if you have any questions or concerns regarding the inclement weather policy or procedures.
