FORK UNION, VA – Colonel David L. Coggins, President of Fork Union Military Academy, is pleased to announce two position changes that will take effect immediately. Kelly Barnette has accepted the new role as the Academy’s Director of Communications, while Jackie Montero-Sharpe is the Director of Enrollment Management.
Barnette will oversee the all aspects of the Academy’s communication efforts, along with Montero-Sharpe running the Admissions office, including the re-enrollment of current cadets. The two roles became available when Dan Thompson took over the Academy’s Marketing efforts and COL Tripp Billingsley took over the Academy’s Advancement Department.
Montero-Sharpe arrived at the Academy in July of 2019 as the Director of International Enrollment. Prior to becoming the Director of Admissions, the Ridgewood, N.J., native managed international enrollment efforts in the United Kingdom, Mexico, Colombia, Panama, Vietnam, Hong Kong, Thailand, China, Japan, South Korea, Saudi Arabia, United Arab Emirates, Ghana, Nigeria and Kenya.
Prior to Fork Union, Montero-Sharpe was the Associate Director of International Admission at St. Margaret’s School in Tappahannock, Va., for four years. She exclusively corresponded and communicated with international prospective students and their families, planned and executed admission and alumnae events across the United States, Central America and Asia.
Montero-Sharpe spent a year at her alma mater, Sweet Briar College, as an Admission Counselor, guiding prospective students through the college application, financial aid and college decision making process.
She graduated from Sweet Briar College in 2013 with a Bachelor of Arts in Spanish with a Latin American Studies and Business minor.
Barnette came to Fork Union Military Academy in July 2016 as the Director of Sports Information. Barnette was promoted to an Assistant Athletic Director in 2019.
Previously, Barnette worked as a Sports Information Director at the collegiate level, spending time at Virginia Tech, University of Richmond and Davidson College.
A native of Fork Union, Va., Barnette returned home after spending a year at Davidson College, where she was the primary contact for football and baseball.
Before arriving in Davidson, N.C., Barnette spent two years at the University of Richmond, serving as the primary contact for women's basketball, field hockey and men's and women's tennis. She also served as the secondary contact for football.
From 2011-13, Barnette was a sports information assistant at Virginia Tech, where she assisted with all 17 varsity sports, as well as being the primary contact for the top-25 women’s soccer and swimming and diving programs.
Prior to joining the Virginia Tech staff, Barnette was a sports information assistant for a year at her alma mater, Radford University.
Barnette graduated from Radford University in 2010 with bachelor’s degree in sports administration. She is the daughter of Director of Athletics John Shuman and wife of Admissions Counselor Reggie Barnette.
