English I provides a general review of the standard rules of grammar and usage with emphasis on the parts of speech and their various functions within the sentence. There is also an emphasis on punctuation and on problematic areas (such as commonly misused and confused words, etc.). All of these elements are taught both in theory and within the context of writing. Short writing exercises focus on the correct use of target vocabulary in addition to grammatical concept(s) currently being studied. Longer writing exercises focus on expository writing with emphasis on the writing process, coherence, and style. The course emphasizes daily writing (short to medium length) such as book reports, critical reviews, and guided response; there will be no major research project. The focus of daily reading complements and provides examples of the writing strategies and styles being studied. Additionally, reading selections provide practice in and development of critical reading and thinking skills.
