Based on their conduct, academic excellence, and overall performance during the grading term, three of the top cadets from each grade level are chosen within each category: Cadet Officer, Cadet NCO, Day Student Cadet, and Boarding Cadet. These cadets then appear before a board of selection chaired by CSM Glenn Sidwell of the Commandant's Department staff. CSM Sidwell, joined by the Cadet Corps' Battalion Commander, Executive Officer, and Adjutant, quiz the cadet contestants on matters of school history, current events, first aid, and other areas of general knowledge. The board then selects the top cadet in each category to receive the top honor for the grading term. At the end of the year, the cadets chosen during each of the five grading terms then compete for selection as Cadet Officer of the Year, Cadet NCO of the Year, Day Student Cadet of the Year, and Cadet of the Year honors.
