Weekly Update for March 10, 2023

We hope everyone had a great week! Below are the parent updates for this week. 

Spring Break Reminder 

We hope everyone enjoys their spring break with their cadet! This is a reminder that Spring Break ends on Sunday, March 19 at 7 PM. All boarding cadets are required to be back on campus by 7 PM unless they have pre-approval from LTC Tony Moss and COL Mike Goad. 

All boarding cadets must return between 9 AM and 7 PM on Sunday, March 19. 

Fork Union Announces Retirement of COL Coggins as President, Names CAPT Black as Successor

Colonel David L. Coggins, USMC (Ret.), Fork Union Military Academy's 11th President, has announced his intent to retire later this year. The Academy will celebrate Colonel Coggins' tenure in connection with Fork Union Military Academy's 125th Anniversary, which will be held on October 13-15, 2023. 

CAPT Mark E. Black, USN (Ret.) has been named the 12th President of Fork Union Military Academy. CAPT Black will be designated as President-elect immediately and assume the role as President upon Colonel Coggins' retirement in the fall. CAPT Black is a current faculty member and coach and fully appreciates the Academy's dedication to "Body, Mind & Spirit". He currently serves as a teacher of US Military & War History, Leadership & Ethics, and US Government.

Fork Union Announces Selection of New Commandant as LTC Moss Announces Retirement

Fork Union Military Academy announced that LTC Roy A. "Tony" Moss, US Army (Ret.), will be retiring as Commandant of Cadets at the conclusion of this school year. LTC Charlie E. Coulter III has been selected to serve as the Academy's next Commandant of Cadets.

ASVAB Test Set for Friday, April 14 - Deadline to Sign Up is Friday, March 31

The Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery is one of the most widely used, multiple-aptitude tests in the world to support for Career Exploration. The assessment measures your strengths and weaknesses and aligns post-secondary options with your interests, skills, and work values. 

This test is only open to juniors, seniors and postgraduates. It will be administered in the Library on Friday, April 14 from 1 PM to 4 PM. 

Interested cadets must pre-register for the test with Ms. White in the Commandant's Department. The deadline to sign up is Friday, March 31 at 3 PM.

April's ACT Test Date is April 15 - Deadline to Register is Friday, March 10

Senior/PG Dinner Set for March 25

The annual Senior/PG Dinner is set for Saturday, March 25, 2023 at 6:15 PM in the Estes Dining Hall. The Senior/PG Dinner is hosted by our Advancement Team honoring the seniors and postgraduates. Parents of seniors and postgraduates are invited to this event. 

If you are a senior or postgraduate parent, please RSVP to Ms. Shannon Higginbotham if you can attend with how many guests you will have.

Parade Season - Select Times have been Added!

We are all very anxious for the spring season to bring sunshine and warmer weather! The spring season gives us an opportunity to show off our Corps of Cadets in special parades. All cadets are required to participate in parades. The schedule is below:

Ring Ceremony Set for March 31 

The annual Ring Ceremony will be held in the Wicker Chapel on Friday, March 31 at 10:30 AM. If your cadet ordered a class ring this year, they will be included in the Ring Ceremony.

Does Your Cadet Need a Care Package or "Pick-Me-Up" to Finish the Year?

Ms. Rhonda White, Fork Union's Coordinator of Assessments & Student Records, has been offering something special to parents if they would like to celebrate their cadet's birthday at FUMA if it falls during the school year. Ms. White offers birthday bags and/or special cupcakes for parents to purchase. If you are interested, please contact Ms. White at  or 434-842-4203. 

Ms. White is now offering the below menu to all parents who would like to send care packages or pick-me-up treats for any occasion.

Webinar on Scholarships

Mrs. Kelsey Hill has arranged for a webinar for all parents with Monica Matthews, a former teacher and stay at home mom who helped her sons win tens of thousands of dollars in scholarships. She has two e-books that she constantly updates each year. She is willing to do a ZOOM webinar with all FUMA parents either on Monday, March 27 or Tuesday, March 28. If you are interested in participating, please fill out the form below.

Course Requests

The College Placement & Academic Services team started meeting with cadets this week in grades 8-11 to discuss academic course requests and post-FUMA plans. Mrs. Hill and Dr. Benson are meeting with the Corps of Cadets grades 8-11 during Term 4. An email summarizing the meeting will be sent home to families during Term 5. 

Mrs. Schnelle meets with those in 7th grade to discuss the 8th grade academic schedule. 

Audio Newsletter

The College Placement & Academic Services March Newsletter (The Next Stop) will be available in the March 24 Front & Center. Please make sure you give a listen for updates and helpful information for all grade levels in preparing for post-high school plans. January and February's can be found here.

Parents, We Need Your Help!

Our biggest marketing tool is positive word of mouth. If you are pleased with how your cadet has progressed through his time here on campus, we would love to sit down with you for a parent testimonial. Prospective parents love to hear feedback from current families on their FUMA experience. 2023 Graduation Start Time has been Set

We are excited to announce that the 2023 Senior Class will have their graduation ceremony at 10 AM on Friday, June 2, 2023. The ceremony will be held at the Stadium Field and there is no limit to the amount of guests, weather permitting. More details, including the graduation guest speaker, will be formally announced at a later time. 

It is Time to Re-Enroll Your Cadet!

The Admissions Office made re-enrollment contracts available on SchoolAdmin on Monday, January 2. All current cadets in grades 7th through 11th are eligible to return for the 2023-2024 academic year. We are encouraging all families to re-enroll early to receive a discount of $1,000. If you re-enroll before March 3, you will receive the $1,000 discount. 

The deadline to re-enroll for the 2023-2024 academic year is April 30, 2023. If you re-enroll after April 30, there will be a late fee charged per month after the deadline. 

  • Tuition Protection Plan: The cost of the Tuition Protection Plan is $1,000 for the 2023-2024 academic year and must be paid prior to your cadet's arrival on campus.
  • Re-Enrollment Deadline: Sunday, April 30, 2023.
  • Early Payment Discount/Credit: any family who pays their FACTS account balance, 100% full, prior to their cadet's arrival on campus will receive a $1,000 credit.

Fork Union Announces the "125 for the 125th" Campaign

Following a very successful Day of Giving on Founder's Day weekend, Fork Union Military Academy announced the start of the public phase of a fund-raising campaign, "125 for the 125th," in honor of the school's 125th anniversary, which will be observed the weekend of October 13-15, 2023.

Kristin is a professional photographer contracted by the Academy to take campus photos throughout the year and have been specializing in high school senior photography for 10 years.     • All cadets are required to participate.
