A Little About Fork Union Military Academy
Fork Union Military Academy is an all-boys, Christian, military academy. Our school motto is “Body, Mind and Spirit.” We want each young man to become independent, caring of others, and successful. We believe FUMA provides an environment that nurtures their talents, builds confidence and expands their vision for the future. Even though our name has "Military" as part of it, we are not associated with any branch of the military, but we do use the best aspects of the military system, such as respect, responsibility, discipline, and leadership, in providing an atmosphere in which spiritual, mental and physical growth can flourish.
Our Middle School program (grades 6-8) is a traditional program with several subjects in a day's work. It is separate from the Upper School, and has a Headmaster, Commandant, Secretary, House Mothers and teaching staff. A student's day is filled with school work, athletics, arts and activities. It is a small school setting which allows for a small teacher to student ratio and real camaraderie.
Our Upper School's teaching program is highly successful. It's called the "One Subject Plan." The students are taught only one subject at a time. Each school subject's session lasts 7 weeks. The teaching is in-depth and the students do not just memorize the work, but learn to apply the work in everyday situations. After completing the Term 1 seven week session, they begin a new subject class. There are five terms throughout the school year (just like American traditional school). Our Guidance Director creates a graduation plan for every student that enrolls in FUMA Upper School. Each plan is personalized for that particular young man, by evaluating his school transcripts, his talents, his choice for college and the classes and credits needed for graduation. On average FUMA receives over $6 million in college scholarship grants per year.
