"Crooning Commandant" was the introduction I received from FUMA Alumnus, former faculty member, entertainer (magician), and benefactor Mr. Bobby Spencer, a.k.a. Colonel Spencer. Mr. Spencer asked if I would provide entertainment at the twenty year anniversary of the Scottsville School Apartments for Seniors in Scottsville, VA. on 23 September 2011.
I've performed for several centers affiliated with the Jefferson Area Board for the Aging, (JABA), which includes the Scottsville Senior Center. The vocals have also taken me to the Richmond and Petersburg areas for holiday and seasonal concerts.
The genre of music for the evening was "The Crooners", i.e., Frank Sinatra, Perry Como, Nat King Cole, and Dean Martin with a few pop songs intermingled. It was moving to see the smiles on faces of those that had flashbacks when hearing "Strangers in the Night", "More", and "Let Me Try Again" to name a few. The song "Everybody Loves Somebody, Sometime" brought several couples to the dance floor, to include Mr. Spencer.
It was a privilege to assist Mr. Spencer and the seniors with their celebration and bring an evening of music to their program. As always Mr. Spencer sends his warm regards to FUMA. His plan is to have another event at Victory Hall in Scottsville which will headline the "Crooning Commandant". Stay Tuned!
