Away: Varsity (PG) Football vs. Hargrave Military Academy
In the final game of the season the Blue Devils really capped off a great season with a huge win over long time rival Hargrave Military Academy. It was a great effort on both sides of the ball as the Blue Devils played one of their best games in all phases of the game.
The game started out with the now traditional Hargrave 50 yard line taunt, where they brought their whole team to the 50 yard line. Thankfully, cooler heads prevailed on the FUMA side of the altercation and Hargrave was awarded a 15 yard penalty on the opening kick-off. This put the Blue Devils in good field position on the opening drive of the game which set up a great opening drive. Just when the drive seemed like it was going to stall QB Michael Fafaul hit WR Mack Hollins for a 30 yard pass to keep the drive alive and also set up a 20 yard TD pass from Michael Fafaul to TE Jerrell Adams making the score 7-0. Then on Hargrave’s second possession, the defense forced a punt but the snap went over the punters head into the endzone which resulted in a Safety making the score 9-0. However, the Tigers would not go down without a fight and they scored a touchdown and a field goal in quick succession making tying the score at 9 apiece. But just before the half the Blue Devils responded with a 35 yard TD run by RB Brandon Jones making the score at the half 16-9.
The second half is where FUMA really turned up the heat on Hargrave. The Tigers’ first drive was ended by an interception by Mack Hollins which set up another FUMA scoring drive capped off by a TD pass from RB Nagee Jackson to Jerrell Adams making the score 23-9. The Blue Devils defense forced another 3 and out by Hargrave and the FUMA offense responded with another drive that ended in a TD pass from QB Cordale Jones to Mack Hollins making the score 30-9. After more dominating play by the FUMA defense the Blue Devils put the nail in the coffin with a 4th quarter 52 yard TD pass from Michael Fafaul to WR Robert Lockhart making the final score 37-9.
This victory was truly a team effort where the Blue Devils played great in every phase of the game. Special mention should be made of the defense which completely shut down Hargrave’s offense, Defensive Coordinator Sam Mavrick had the defense ready for anything and Hargrave couldn’t do anything to stop them. It was a great end to a great season and the players celebrated by dumping the water cooler on Head Coach John Shuman as time expired. Now the PG Team is getting ready for our Annual International Bowl the “Maple Syrup Cup” against the Canadian National Team on December 6th.
