3-1 Fork Union Military Academy's varsity soccer team opened its season on Tuesday with a quality 3-1 win against rival Woodberry Forest. The Blue Devils entered the contest motivated and showed Woodberry that they are not going to be easily defeated this season. Despite controlling the ball in the first half, FUMA was not able to score. After allowing an early second-half goal, the Blue Devils bounced back to tie the game with a great finish by senior, Dustin Russell. A few minutes later basketball standout, Jonah Dew, scored again for FUMA to give the home team a 2-1 lead. The Blue Devils continued to challenge Woodberry’s goalkeeper and 20 minutes before the end of the game Russell connected again, this time putting the ball past the goalkeeper from a long-range free kick. Special recognition goes to newcomer. David Mason. who started as a goalkeeper and played a good game. FUMA will travel to Lynchburg on Friday to compete next at the Seven Hill’s tournament at 3:30 p.m. against Liberty Christian Academy.
