Former FUMA Coach, James Hazlett, passes away

Mr. James Hazlett of Richmond, VA., passed away on Wednesday, August 4th peacefully at his residence. He was born in Tarentum, PA on January 13, 1926, the son of the late James and Anna Hazlett, Sr. Mr. Hazlett graduated from Tarentum High School in 1944 and entered the Air Force during World War II. Upon discharge, he attended Kiski Prep before enrolling at Westminster College. He subsequently transferred to Susquehanna to play football under Amos Alonzo Stagg. While at Susquehanna, he was named Little All-America while playing center in 1950.

Upon graduation, he became coach at Springdale High School where he had an undefeated 10-0 season in 1959. After leaving Springdale, he coached football and baseball at Edinboro, Susquehanna and Kean Colleges before coming to Fork Union Military Academy. He served as Assistant Football Coach and Assistant Baseball coach in 1979 and then returned to the Academy in 1987 where he helped coach football and baseball until several months ago.

In addition to being inducted into the Hall of Fame at both Edinboro and Susquehanna, he was inducted into the Alle-Kiski Sports Hall of Fame in 1987. He was a member of All Saints Episcopal Church Richmond, VA .

He is survived by his brother-in-law Raymond G. Keener of Millersville, MD., 4 nieces and 3 nephews and 3 great nephews and one great niece.

Jim is preceded in death by his wife, Kathleen "Kay" (Thompson) Hazlett who passed in 2004. His sister, Arla Mae Gwynn, his niece Corby Bailey, sister-in-law Josephine "Jay" Keener and his brother-in-law David and his wife, Shirley Thompson.

At Mr. Hazlett's request there will be no public visitation. A Funeral Service will be held at Greenwood Memorial Park, Lower Burrell, PA, at 11:00 am on Saturday, August 7th, with Father Gary Miller of Holy Innocents Episcopal Church in Leechburg officiating.
