Ranked 5th in nation, FUMA's swimmers leap into national prominence this year

Fork Union Military Academy's swim team ranked 5th in the nation.

The National Interscholastic Swimming Coaches Association of America today announced the 2009-10 High School Team Rankings. Fork Union Military Academy Swimming and Diving leaped into national prominence this year, garnering a 5th place national team ranking for the private school division! Just edging out University School, the 2010 Ohio High School State Champions, FUMA registered an incredible 5368 points. Points are determined based on the team’s best individual and relay performances in each of the 11 swim events and diving.

FUMA has quickly become a national swimming and diving powerhouse by winning the highly competitive 2010 Virginia Private School State Championship. This year’s team consisted of five All-Americans (and two additional swimmers that made the All-American “B” qualifying time), an unprecedented 18 state qualifiers, and multiple National Championship qualifiers.

No other military school in the country  was among the ranked teams, and FUMA was the highest ranked high school, public or private, from Virginia. In addition, the Blue Devils now hold four of Virginia's swimming & diving records, more than any other school in the state.

Our Blue Devils were in good company falling less than 75 points behind the 2009 National Champions, The Baylor School (Tennessee). The final results for the top 10:
