Debate Team
Faculty Advisor:
Members of FUMA’s Debate Team have the opportunity to compete in forensics and debate events at Virginia Catholic Forensic League tournaments. In this league, FUMA students compete with students from public and private schools across the state. Those who perform well enough at the state level advance to a National Tournament. Forensics events include Dramatic Performance, Duo Interpretation, Extemporaneous Speaking, Oral Interpretation, Oratorical Declamation, and Original Oratory. Debate events include Lincoln-Douglas Debate, Public Forum Debate and Student Congress.
The following was written by a member of FUMA’s 2010-2011 Debate Team,
“The FUMA Debate Team is one of the most challenging, but rewarding clubs on campus. Meeting twice a week and competing once a month, the team’s chief focus throughout the season is that of current events. Most cadets participate in either Student Congress or Public Forum forms of debate competition, both of which involve researching and having thorough knowledge of assigned topics. Speech writing and preparation for the debates requires effort and commitment, and in many cases, using one’s own free time. However, it is totally worth it. From the speeches to the awards to the people we meet, competitions are exciting. Debate is the best way to keep up with current events on an individual level. Participating in debate also looks excellent on college applications.”
