What's FUMA doing about the H1N1?
Influenza like activity is rapidly increasing within the United States. Last week, Virginia surveillance reports maintain influenza activity at the "widespread" level which means that influenza is present in three or more of Virginia's five regions. Fork Union Military Academy is working in accordance with the Virginia Department of Health, following recommendations from the Centers for Disease Control (CDC). FUMA has created a plan to include prevention, as well as, interventions. In addition to the annual seasonal influenza vaccination, our Infirmary has registered as a H1N1 vaccination center. We anticipate arrival of the seasonal vaccine any day and the arrival of the H1N1 vaccine in late October. For vaccine safety information, please click on this link from the CDC: H1N1 vaccine safety The following steps have been implemented by FUMA: * Register FUMA Infirmary as H1N1 vaccination center. People under age 25 are one of the key groups recommended by CDC's Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP) to be among the first to receive the 2009 H1N1 flu vaccine. * Vaccinate for seasonal influenza when vaccine becomes available * Educate students and staff re: preventative care and signs/symptoms of illness, addressing proper hygiene and infection control measures * Placement of hand sanitizers in all classrooms, dining facility, barracks, infirmary, offices * Placement of sanitizing wipes to be used daily in classrooms, on doorknobs, keyboards, etc. * Attend joint meetings with Virginia Department of Health, Jefferson District, and Fluvanna County Health Department * Develop screening and treatment protocols for influenza like illnesses Our nurses are on duty 24/7. The health and safety of all cadets under the Academy's care remains our primary concern, and every effort continues to ensure their well-being.
