Prep Doubleheader Against Christchurch

The Blue Devils traveled to Christchurch on Thursday, April 24th for a doubleheader that they split winning the first game 15 to 0, but lost the second 10 to 7. In the first game, FUMA batters pounded out 14 hits while scoring 15 runs.

John Malley (3 for 3, double), Josh Brown (2 for 3, 2 doubles) and Sean Sweeney (2 for 4, 2 doubles) led the way as the Blue Devils had 7 doubles in all. Pitcher, Jay Billingsley only gave up 3 hits as the defense was perfect in his support. The second game was a complete reversal from the first game as the Blue Devils only gave up 3 hits but committed six errors. Cole Herod (2 for 3, double and a home run) and Sean Sweeney (1 for 3, home run) helped FUMA claw back to within three runs but we couldn't quite make up the gap.

Orienteering Travels to Rochester, NY

The team had a very good weekend and made excellent progress with this competition.

Friday the team traveled 10 hours to Rochester, NY and in the evening held study hall. This was necessary because we were going to miss the study period on Sunday evening due to the return trip. The hotel obliged us by allowing our cadets to use their breakfast room for our study hall. Thus, we had a period of supervised study (as we always do). Even away our cadets are following their normal routine.

No break for FUMA against St. Chris this week

The pitching for Saint Christopher shut down the Blue Devils twice this week. On Tuesday, FUMA lost 8 to 1 and then being blanked out at Saint Chris in Richmond on Thursday 10 to 0. The pitchers for Saint Christopher bedeviled the FUMA hitters allowing only 5 hits in the two games. FUMA had a chance to score in the second game when Ryan Nolan doubled in the first but were unable capitalize on it. Cole Herod was also one for two, hitting the ball hard in his first at bat but was robbed of a single on a nice play by the pitcher.

Blue Devils lose to Collegiate in Prep Baseball

The Blue Devils had another tough outing as they lost to Collegiate 6 to 0 at Collegiate. Collegiate's pitcher L. Jung (signed with the University of Richmond) pitched a 4 hitter and was in trouble in both the fifth and sixth innings as the Blue Devils loaded the bases but were unable to push any runs across the plate. Crusaders Coach Brendan Hayes stated that "Cody is quite possibly the hardest working Crusader we have ever seen. In Cody's two years with the Crusaders he has played midfield, defensive midfield, long stick middie and close defense. Offensively, the Blue Devils were lead by John Malley, Cole Herod and Jay Billingsley who were a combined 7 for 11. Defensively the outfield duo of Jay Billingsley and Ron Berscak had a busy day with catcher Ryan Nolan picking off two runners trying to steal third. FUMA Track takes VPL Championship

After winning the state meet in convincing fashion a week earlier, the Blue Devils worked hard to avoid a let down in the Prep League Championship. The team held its championship form for one last meet in the 2008 Indoor campaign and closed out a super successful season.

Marcus Dowtin won big in the 55 dash and was a close second in the shot put. The distance crew ran a best in the 4x800 against a tough Saint Christopher's crew with a 8:18 clocking. Jeremy Haney ran an incredible 1:58.5 leg and returned to win the 1600 and 1000. His efforts were rewarded with the Running events MVP. Also getting event wins were Chris Pride (300), Darren Simpson (3200), and Austin Ofoma (long jump).

The story of the meet though was Brian Zitterkopf. In very short time the Merit Scholar set a personal best in the 55 hurdles with a 7.98 for second, forced a jump off in the high jump and rallied in the last round of the triple jump with a 44'9 for the victory. The senior was named the meet's MVP.

FUMA Dominates in State Indoor Track Meet

Breaking out their best performance for the biggest meet, the Fork Union track team defended its Indoor title from a year ago. Though the meet is just two years old, Fork Union is quickly establishing itself as the indoor track power. Though the score would indicate a dominant victory, the Blue Devils had all they could handle from the host Saint Christopher's. On form the meet figured to be a 9 point swing either way. However, the day would prove to have several key moments and FUMA managed to get the most out of those times.

FUMA Swimming & Diving finishes 4th in State Championship

For the first time in recent history the Fork Union Military Academy Blue Devils broke into the top 10 teams in the state championship final standings, finishing 4th overall!

"I'm especially proud of how our young men came together as a team to accomplish this leap in standings (from 12th place last year), as was evident by our fantastic relay swims," states Coach Jim Bocci. "We started the meet as a huge underdog in the 200 medley relay with a group of virtually unknown swimmers seeded four seconds out of the top spot." It was going to be a struggle just to make the finals, but when the smoke cleared the team finished second overall with a time of 1:38.91 (K. Housh 26.59, S. Ibrahim 26.78, M. Jewell 23.69, T. Calhoun 21.85) - this smashed our school record by over three seconds!

Orienteering Heads to Georgia

Just west of Augusta, Georgia, Saturday morning dawned with a temperature of 44F and the temperature dropped for the rest of the day. In addition, there was a constant rain falling and this is an orienteering coach's nightmare! Kids are so susceptible to hypothermia in such conditions. In 2002, Georgia held a meet under similar conditions and a number of competitors had to be found in the forest and treated for hypothermia. We did not want that to happen to our cadets. Fortunately, we were aware of the weather predictions and were well prepared.

Track 2008 Underway-3rd Place Finish at Fork Union Invite

The FUMA Track team began the 2008 campaign knowing they had one tough act to follow. If the month of January is any indication, the Blue Devils will do a fine job. The Blue Devils had a solid effort at the New Year's Opener at the Estes Center and returned a week later to rally to a third place finish at the 19th FUMA Invitational.

FUMA picked up a rare win in the 4x200 with a 1:35.9 effort. Leading the way in the relay was senior Chris Pride. The Nike All American put FUMA into the lead and Waverly Washington, Austin Ofoma and Marcus Dowtin never looked back. The win was a first for the Blue Devils in Invitational history. FUMA scored in eight of the fifteen events and earned a third place finish.

Merry Christmas from Coach Wood

Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year to all of our FUMA families and friends. Again, this year, we could not have accomplished what we did without your support. It was deeply appreciated.

Congratulations to Mike Jewell and Bob Hart for making the All-Prep Squad - First Team (Nice Christmas Gift!). Again congratulations to all the players for turning the Program around!

We have a few players currently recruited at the collegiate level. I will keep you posted. We have also been invited to play in Collegiate's Indoor Tournament. Hopefully we can participate this year.

Again, have a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!

PS: The English Premier League will be showing some great matches on Boxing Day (December 26).

Merry Soccer Christmas!

Former PG in Division II National Championship

Bo May of Apex, NC recently played in the Division II National Championship game for Valdosta State University. Bo is a former PG player for Coach John Shuman at Fork Union Military Academy. He plays DT for the Blazers and is a senior this year.

Bo and the rest of the Valdosta State Blazer football team took home the NCAA Division II National Championship on December 15, in a dramatic 25-20 win over Northwest Missouri State. The Bearcats played unsuccessfully in the previous two championship games, and the Blazers showed no hesitation in sending NMS to its third consecutive title game loss.

Prep Overpowers Collegiate in Overtime

What better way to set the tone for Parents Weekend at FUMA than to watch a powerful prep football game against a top rival. The Blue Devils beat Collegiate 41-34 in a very exciting overtime game. The Blue Devils scored first with a 2 yard touchdown run from Patrick Myrick(10 carries, 48 yards, 7 of 9 passing for 89 yards). Collegiate got the ball back and drove the length of the field but Curtis Shannon-Berry intercepted the ball in the endzone to stop Collegiate's first drive. We got the ball at the 20 yard line and drove down the field and scored on Marcus Dowtin's(24 carries, 130 yards) 4 yard touchdown run. Collegiate responded with a touchdown of their own, but on the ensuing kickoff Chris Pride returned the kick 90 yards for a touchdown. The scoring continued to go back and forth until the forth quarter when FUMA went up 34 to 28 with 1:29 left in the game.

Varsity Soccer Updates

As always I want to God for getting us through without any major injuries. I would like to acknowledge everyone who has supported the matches this week, especially those who made the trip to Hargrave Academy.

This was a difficult week for the team. We drew level 3-3 with Hargrave in a tough, and physically played match. This one was a see saw event with both teams a certain points holding and losing the lead. When the two over time periods ended we found ourselves dead locked and very tired.

The match against Benedictine went poorly final score Benedictine 4 FUMA 1. Our play was disjointed, lacking a quick transition from our defense through the midfield. Benedictine did a nice job of moving the ball, our reaction to their play was entirely too slow. Hopefully a couple of days off will help us regain our legs and focus. In the mean time I will be designing some motivational training sessions.

Jr. Prep Loses to St. Christopher's

The Blue Devils lost another tough battle to St. Christopher's School 16-22. FUMA started the game on the right foot with a 97-yard kickoff return for a touchdown by Louis Litkett! FUMA's defense stepped up to the plate once again only giving up two touchdowns, one late in the 2nd quarter. FUMA's offense did an incredible job in the first half putting together two drives of 11 and 12 plays respectively. The first drive stalled out on a failed 4th down conversion attempt and we ran out of time on the second half.

Soccer This Week

This was to say the least an interesting week for the team. The result of the Collegiate match was disappointing Collegiate 4 FUMA 2. We started flat and Collegiate came out hard and hit us quick for two goals. We never really got off of our heels through out the match. The good point is we refused to roll over, although the effort was at times disjointed we played all the way through the last whistle. Our two scores came off the boot of M. Jewell.

Jr. Prep vs. Woodberry Forest

Tuesday night the Blue Devils fell victim to Woodberry Forest School 6-12. Fork Union had several distractions throughout the course of the week leading up to this Tuesday's game. This was reflective of the first half as Fork Union fell to a 0-12 deficit in the first half.

The team was challenged at the half to come out and stop Woodberry on the first drive and then drive down and score to give us the opportunity to win. The boys did just that. In the meantime we lost our starting QB on the first offensive play to injury. However, our back up QB put together a great drive, which was capped off by a 12 yard reception for a TD.

FUMA Orienteering at Hemlock Overlook

The new boys showed that they could get through basic courses, and the veterans made it through some demanding advanced courses. Pictures can be viewed at http://photos.forkunion.com/gallery/3532274#199767149. Thanks to Gary and Bonnie Van Alstyne, parents of MS Cadet Adam Van Alstyne, for the pictures. Thanks also to the parents who attended the meet - it may have been an all time record.

Our next meet will be the first weekend in November. It is an individual championship event. Information for the event can be found at http://www.uschamps.org/index.php? We had a good day on Sunday, but we have a lot of work to do to be competitive for a meet at this level. Still, the boys have good attitudes, and are working hard to improve. Over the next weeks we will be increasing the amount of distance that we run, increasing the amount of intervals as we do speed work, and work on learning and honing more technical navigation skills.

MS Football vs. Collegiate

Not having a scrimmage this year, the team was a bit nervous at the beginning, falling behind 14-0. We soon gained our composure and made some adjustments, dominating the next 2 quarters defensively and scoring twice on two long runs, one by Cadet Frezzell and one by Cadet Smith, cutting the lead to 14-12. The defense continued to hold strong, giving up only one big play since the first quarter, and Collegiate increased their lead to 22-12. With 50 seconds left in the game, Cadet Frezzell threw a beautiful pass to Cadet Smith, only to have the touchdown called back due to an illegal block on the 8 yard line.

There were a lot of positive things to build upon and the team looks forward to a successful season. The next game is Thursday, September 27 at Fluvanna high school, and we look forward to evening up our record.

Byron Davis, a former world record holder, 12 time NCAA All-American, and a past member of the United States Swimming Resident National Team based out of the Olympic Training Center in Colorado, visited Fork Union Military Academy this past weekend. During his visit he conducted leadership seminars and motivational speeches with FUMA's student body, faculty and staff. His presentations included in water technique training for the swim team, and a classroom session on technique, competition, dryland training, and a discussion of his experiences as an elite swimmer. Byron was the world record holder in the 50 meter butterfly and one of the top five 100 meter butterfly swimmers in the world. He is the founding director of Practical Impact Coaching, based out of California, and works with Fortune 500 executives and elite athletes in various areas of performance enhancement, leadership training, and goal attainment. Byron grew up in Cleveland, Ohio, with Jim Bocci, Head Swim Coach at Fork Union Military Academy/Fork Union Aquatic Club, where they started swimming at the local YMCA. According to Coach Bocci, "Byron has always stood out as a man of honor, integrity and faith, and I am proud to call him friend. We were excited that he could take time out of his busy schedule to visit. His unique insights have helped guide and mold my coaching philosophy and training program for both the high school and club swim programs. I was able to use the visit as a grooming period for my yearly training plan, and we analyzed every aspect of the program. It was a great learning experience that will pay dividends for my swimmers come championship time."

Varsity Soccer Wins Against Trinity

Trinity came in with a well balanced squad, moving the ball nicely. They were looking to move the ball outside, stretching our defense, then cross back to the middle, while runners flooded the off ball side . We did a nice job of keeping our back line intact a squeezing the field as a unit. R.Hart, M.Jewell, and A. Wells, did a nice job of transitioning the ball quickly from our middle third of the field into the attacking third.

FUMA forward W.J. Lin drew a tough assignment and was triple marked throughout most of the match. His dogged play up top created space for the midfielders to exploit. Midway through the first half this paid off when M. Jewell hit a gap in Trinity's line and sent a long shot over their GK's head giving us a half time lead 1-0.

PG Football pays off for FUMA Alumnus-Danny Aiken

"If I hadn't gone to Fork Union, I wouldn't have been able to go out here today and do this," states Danny Aiken ('07) folllowing UVA's victory against UNC last Saturday. As a freshman at University of Virginia, Aiken has been able to show his talent as a long snapper on the field. During that game Aiken snapped for five field goals and three punts. A recent article in The Roanoke Times highlights Aiken's specialty and how "less than a year after he began snapping for Fork Union's postgraduate team, he is now playing in fron of crowds of 60,000 or more as a true freshman."

Varsity Soccer ties Norfolk Academy

Going into Friday's match against Norfolk Academy the team knew it was going to be a tough outing. During the training sessions the team worked hard to learn a new tactical scheme to run against Norfolk. The sweat and hard work paid off. Jr. Prep Football Tackles Hargrave

This year's Jr. Prep philosophy has been focused on team and being a teammate! On Thursday the Jr. Prep football team did just that riding on the backs of the lineman up front. Fork Union amassed 254 yards of total offense on 36 plays. In the trenches you have to give most of the credit to the young men up front, however, between running backs Nathan Lundberg, Louis Litkett, and AJ Bailey the offense compiled 180 yards rushing. Also, quarterback Randall Baker completed 60% of his passes for 74 yards, 1 touchdown, and 1 two-point conversion.

Soccer vs. Christchurch

The men’s soccer team was defeated by Christchurch with a score of
3-0 on Tuesday afternoon. The team played uninspired soccer with a transitional play through the middle third of the field. Too many turn overs occurred in this area which consistently put the team on its back foot, and further limited their ability to push and hold the ball in the attacking third. There were some moments of strong individual effort from some the players, but as Coach Wood stated after the game "We win as a team, and we lose as a team."

FUMA Defeats STAB 28-21

A match that some thought would be a runaway turned into a slugfest on this bright Saturday afternoon as FUMA faced Charlottesville's St. Anne's-Belfield in a prep football contest. FUMA Varsity Soccer Wins in Overtime

In their first test of the season, the varsity soccer team defeated Liberty Christian 2-0 in overtime. Liberty took a 1-0 lead about 5 minutes into the game and held that lead over FUMA for almost the entire duration of regulation time. A. Wells poked in the tying goal sending the game to overtime. Within two minutes of the first over time period W. Lee, with an assist from Wells, scored what would prove to be the winning goal.

Liberty played a very good match and presented FUMA with a tough challenge, but as one of the players stated after the match, "All the running payed off." Coach Wood said he is proud of the team and thanks all of the parents for their support during and after the game.

Soccer Scrimmage against Woodberry Forest

The soccer team started the season yesterday with a scrimmage against Woodberry Forest. Coach Wood described it as "a typical first time out endeavor." The team started strong, got caught by Woodberry countering, and gave up a goal. This was followed by a post goal depression which resulted in further damage. After the first half the team regrouped and made some defensive adjustments with a much stronger second half. During the scrimmage there were many opportunities for the team to pressure Woodberry. The next game is scheduled for this Friday in Fork Union against Liberty Christian.

Prep football rolls over Norfolk Academy 40-0

The Blue Devils were just too big and quick for the Bulldogs of Norfolk Academy as FUMA rolled to a 40-0 shutout in their second game of the season. Touchdowns came from a number of FUMA players as Coach Sullivan gave them a variety of opportunities to score. Bubble screen passes, runs up the middle, and slant patterns across midfield were all looking solid and well-executed by the FUMA team, and stout play from the defense shut down any opportunities for scoring by their opponent.

The game was broadcast by our ESPN affiliate, ESPN 840am in Charlottesville, and the game broadcast is archived for your listening here on our web site.
