Laue Provides Inspiration to Whitescarver's Granddaughter
The old cliche "It's a small world." definitely rings true with this story of hope and inspiration for the granddaughter of Col. Whitescarver. In a recent article in The New York Times Kelli Whitescarver describes how she sustained injuries to her left arm during a car accident in November 2008 that resulted in having her left hand amputated. She was travelling on Interstate 95 when she lost control of her vehicle. She spent three weeks at the Medical College of Virginia and was thinking she would never resume a normal life until she heard about Kevin Laue, a basketball player at FUMA. She found clips of him playing basketball on YouTube and quoted in the article, "Seeing Kevin game me hope."
To read the story go to The New York Times.

Debaters Win First, Second & Sweepstakes Trophy
On December 13, 2008 the Debate Team travelled to Charlottesville High School and competed in a Virginia Catholic Forensic League tournament. Three Public Forum teams and four Student Congress "senators" competed. The "senators" were Jonathan Blair, Jake Hargrove, Kelly Haskins, and Ben Wood. Blair won first place, Wood won second place, and Hargrove was named a State qualifier. All three have been invited to compete at the State Finals tournament in February. Because of their rankings, they enabled FUMA to tie for the second place sweepstakes trophy in debate.
The Public Forum debaters argued the resolution: Resolved: That, on balance, social networking websites have a positive impact on the United States. Cadets who competed in Public Forum debate were: Justin Gootee, Gunnar Knudson, Andrew Patterson, Robert Rich, Van Trainor, and Ben Villamora.
On February 7, 2009 FUMA debaters will have one more opportunity to compete and qualify to participate in the State Finals tournament.

Swim Meet at St. Catherine's
FUMA Swimming and Diving opened the 2008-09 dual meet season with a quad-meet and big wins over rival school STC, along with NSA, TCS, and FCS. When the dust settled FUMA came out on top, besting all including St. Christopher's School, the #2 team in the state of Virginia the past two years. Our cadets won every individual event, the relays, and finished 1st, 2nd, and 4th in diving. According to Coach Bocci after the meet, "The men are on a mission. Through faith, hard work, and dedication they've positioned themselves to achieve great things this year…it's what FUMA is all about. I very proud of these young men." He went on to say, "This meet was only one small part of the story. We have a tough schedule in front of us, including some of the best teams in the country. They have also set extremely high academic goals, including maintaining an overall team GPA above 3.5. I know they can do it!"
The final results with FUMA winning:
against St. Christopher's - 138-44
against Nansemond-Suffolk - 141-38
against Covenant - 141-31
against Fredericksburg Christian
