Cadets take VIP Tour of Pentagon

Nine FUMA cadets, two staff members and a faculty member had the opportunity of a lifetime on November 14th by taking a VIP Tour of the Pentagon in Washington, DC. "This was not an ordinary tour by any means," states Bev Hanlin, FUMA Registrar and Community Service Coordinator. "When we arrived we were taken to a reception area where at that very moment the first female four-star General, Ann Dunwoody, was being sworn one floor below us and we watched it on the Pentagon network."

The cadets that took the tour included Troy Anthony, Trace Lacour, Jeremy Gencavage, Gunnar Knudson, Caleb Haney, Patrick Hayes, William Wilkinson, Joseph Edwards, Calvin Gudeman and Bennett Wales and Edward Jones. Staff members included Mrs. Hanlin and LTC Giszack, Assistant to the President, and teacher, LTC Hitchcock.

After the swearing in ceremony, the group received a tour of the Pentagon and then they were invited to the office of Admiral Michael Mullen, the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff. He greeted each one personally and asked the students about their hometowns, where they wanted to go to college, what plans each of them had for the future. He gave a very inspiring talk to the students and then presented each one with his official coin. A group photo was taken with the nine cadets.

Following the office tour, the cadets and staff were taken to the 911 Chapel which was a very moving and solemn experience. On the departure from the 911 Chapel General Ann Dunwoody and her family were the hallway. They had departed the swearing in ceremony and were on their way to the 911 Chapel.

Finally, the students and staff were treated to lunch in Admiral Mullen’s private dining room. His personal chef came out to greet the group and answered many questions. "It was a fun luncheon," recalled Mrs. Hanlin, "It gave the cadets a chance to inquire about the Admiral's favorite food and find out a little more about the office staff."

During lunch each student was presented with a copy of the photo that had just been taken about an hour earlier with Admiral Mullen. It was in a special folder with the Joint Chief of Staff's seal and it included his signature. Each one also received a baseball with his logo on it.

Upon the return to FUMA the whole group recalled the events of the day and were still amazed as to what each had encountered at the Pentagon. "It truly was an opporutnity of a lifetime and one I don't think any of us will soon forget," recalls Mrs. Hanlin.

FUMA PG Football at University of Kentucky

Fork Union fell to University of Kentucky's JV team 55-28 on a cold afternoon at Commonwealth Stadium. FUMA was led on offense by QB Nick Owens' 155 yards and two TD's. QB Jeff Legree completed five out of nine pass attempts, but he did most of his damage on the ground adding 10 carries for 64 yards and one rushing TD. The WR corps was led by Deon Miller's five catches for 48 yards and one of those coming on a 22 yard scoring strike from QB Nick Owens. WR Jeremiah Maglero added 3 catches for 24 yards, WR D.J. Coles had 2 catches for 44 yards, and WR Darrien Burch produced his best game of the year with 2 catches for 46 yards and one TD. Burch ended the day with 205 all-purpose yards.

The defense held tight, but a few costly penalties negating a 4th down goaline stand and a 46 yard fumble return for a TD by DB Kameron Scott; proved to be momentum changing. LB Bill Romanow and LB Troy Russell led the team in tackles with six apiece and one TFL. DL Donte Rumph added 3 tackles, 1 QB sack, and 2 TFL's to lead the defensive line. QB Sacks were also recorded by Zack Kerr, Alex Johnson, Jonathon Sharp, and Tony Owah. LB Jordan Rigby contributed a solo tackle and a fumble recovery. LB Jonathon Sharp also recorded 3 solo tackles and one TFL.

Cadets bring home Military Team Award at AAU World Powerlifting Competition

Powerlifting arrived in a big way this weekend in Hampton, VA. Cadets Yaqub Abdur-Rahman, Jerrell Dickerson, Kyle Hagerty, and Sequan Swint represented the Academy well at the AAU World Powerlifting Competition by bringing home the Military Team Award. The competition was stiff as our guys were able to edge out an adult National Guard Team from the Washington D.C. area.

All of this is pretty miraculous considering none of the four had ever participated in an organized strength program prior to five weeks ago. Additionally, none of the four had ever performed 2 of the 3 competition lifts prior to then as well.

In five short weeks, Swint was able to squat 1 1/2 time his body weight, Hagerty added forty pounds to his bench press, Abdur-Rahman benched 220 while only weighing 130, and Dickerson nearly deadlifted a whopping 3x his bodyweight.

Earlier in the year, participation in this strength program was made available to all cadets by Major Williams, the Assistant Director of Admissions and a former college football coach and post-graduate football coach here at the Academy.

Congratulations to these cadets for their hard work and great accomplishments.

Yaqub Abdur-Rahman, 1st place, 18/19, 132, Full Power Raw
Jerrell Dickerson, 2nd place, 18/19, 132, Full Power Raw
Kyle Hagerty, 2nd place, 16/17, 165, Full Power Raw
Sequan Swint, 1st place, 14/15, 132, Full Power Raw

Season is half over

October - December is considered the primary college application season for seniors. Thus mid-November marks the half way point in this difficult and at times stressful process. Parents are encouraged to check with their senior cadet to encourage the timely completion of their applications. While many colleges have deadlines in February or even later, we strongly suggest that all applications be complete prior to Christmas.

Former cadets to be honored at Veterans Memorial Service

The FUMA Corps of Cadets and members of the community will gather at FUMA's Veterans Memorial near the entrance to the campus at 6:30pm on the evening of November 11, 2008 to honor those who have served and sacrificed for our nation.

The names of 54 former cadets killed in action while serving in our nation's armed services are inscribed on the memorial wall. Two of those names, Jonathan K. Dozier and Eric D. Terhune, were added within the past few weeks as news came of their deaths in Iraq and Afghanistan.

Jonathan K. Dozier

Just one week after receiving his promotion to Staff Sergeant, Jonathan Dozier, 30, of Chesapeake, VA was killed in combat during operations in Sinsil in central Iraq on Wednesday January 9, 2008. Dozier attended Fork Union Military Academy as a sophomore in the 1993-1994 academic year.

Dozier, a sniper team leader, was one of six soldiers killed when an improvised explosive device was detonated in a building they had entered during combat operations. The soldiers were assigned to the 3rd Squadron, 2nd Stryker Cavalry Regiment, 1st Armored Division, Vilseck, Germany. Also killed in the blast was an Iraqi interpreter.

Dozier joined the army in 1997, then left the service to attend Middle Tennessee State University, re-enlisting in the army in 2005. He was a sniper team leader and was leading his men searching buildings for insurgents and explosives. House bombs are an ongoing threat in the Diyala province, and the house in which Dozier was killed had been cleared once of explosives just two weeks earlier. Diyala province was also the scene of earlier combat that injured FUMA alumnus SSGT Jonathan Grundy, now recovering in Walter Reed Hospital from a bullet wound to the face.

The photo below was sent by Dozier to his father a few days before he was killed and is the last known photo of him.

Eric D. Terhune

Captain Eric D. Terhune, age 34, had already served two tours of duty in Iraq during Operation Iraqi Freedom and was on his third tour of duty in the war on terror, this time in Afghanistan where he was serving with the 2nd Battalion, 7th Marine Regiment, 1st Marine Division deployed in the Farah Province of Afghanistan as part of Operation Enduring Freedom.

Terhune was born to be a Marine, quite literally, at the Quantico Naval Hospital where his father was a member of the Marine Corps, just as Terhune's grandfather had been before him. He attended Fork Union Military Academy during his sophomore year, 1989-1990.

Following high school, Captain Terhune served in the Marine Corps for four years as a non-commissioned officer. After his honorable discharge, Terhune used his GI Bill benefits to finish his education at Morehead State University and then returned to the United States Marine Corps as an officer, earning his wings as a naval aviator flying the CH-53 Sea Stallion helicopter. He received three air medals while serving in Iraq in addition to numerous other combat related awards, including the Purple Heart.

Due to an injury that prevented him from flying, Captain Terhune was serving on the ground in Afghanistan as a Forward Air Controller. On June 19, 2008, Captain Terhune and a fellow Marine in his unit were killed during combat operations.

The photo below was taken of Captain Terhune about thirty minutes before the combat operation in which he was mortally wounded.

Rifle Team in State Tournament

The rifle team traveled to Lexington on Thursday to compete in the State Rifle Tournament at VMI. The guys concluded their season by posting a surprising fourth place finish. The surprise, of course, was because it was a four team field and FUMA had defeated Massanutten twice during the season in dual meets. Hargrave won the championship, with Fishburne placing second.

At the league awards ceremony, Joe Edwards received an award as FUMA's top shooter for the year, and Chris Herring was honored as the league's most improved overall shooter. The team was also presented a plaque for their third place finish during the regular season.

Our team is young (only 2 seniors out of eight, and 7 new shooters this year), so we are looking forward to next season!
