Cadets bring home Military Team Award at AAU World Powerlifting Competition

Powerlifting arrived in a big way this weekend in Hampton, VA. Cadets Yaqub Abdur-Rahman, Jerrell Dickerson, Kyle Hagerty, and Sequan Swint represented the Academy well at the AAU World Powerlifting Competition by bringing home the Military Team Award. The competition was stiff as our guys were able to edge out an adult National Guard Team from the Washington D.C. area.

All of this is pretty miraculous considering none of the four had ever participated in an organized strength program prior to five weeks ago. Additionally, none of the four had ever performed 2 of the 3 competition lifts prior to then as well.

In five short weeks, Swint was able to squat 1 1/2 time his body weight, Hagerty added forty pounds to his bench press, Abdur-Rahman benched 220 while only weighing 130, and Dickerson nearly deadlifted a whopping 3x his bodyweight.

Earlier in the year, participation in this strength program was made available to all cadets by Major Williams, the Assistant Director of Admissions and a former college football coach and post-graduate football coach here at the Academy.

Congratulations to these cadets for their hard work and great accomplishments.
