Noted author and educator, Dr. Robert Brooks, to speak at FUMA

The faculty and staff at Fork Union Military Academy have a national reputation for helping young men develop character, self-discipline, and achieve academic success. This week on campus, the teachers become the students.

Noted author, educator, and award-winning speaker, Dr. Robert Brooks, Ph.D., has been invited to provide staff development at Fork Union Military Academy this Thursday, August 21, 2008.

resilientchildren.JPGA psychologist on the faculty at Harvard Medical School, Dr. Brooks has authored (with co-author Dr. Sam Goldstein) ten books including "Raising Resilient Children" and "The Power of Resilience." Dr. Brooks' most recent book is "Raising a Self-Disciplined Child" published in 2007 by McGraw Hill. Dr. Brooks has an international reputation in his field and FUMA feels very fortunate to have a guest speaker of his stature provide staff training.

While researching the book "Raising Resilient Children" (published in 2001), Dr. Brooks found that a lack of self-discipline was a root cause of many behavioral problems. While most children and parents think of discipline in terms of punishment, Dr. Brooks says that the goal of discipline is to help children become more responsible, confident, and resilient. Effective discipline is proactive, not reactive, employing the old cliché that "an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure." Dr. Brooks is expected to help teachers learn new ways to create motivating environments for learners, and use the power of relationship to enhance learning, and to help produce self-disciplined and resilient students.

Dr. Brooks will meet with the whole school faculty and staff from 9:00am to 12:00noon on Thursday morning in the Estes Dining Hall, and then meet with Upper School faculty from 1:00pm to 2:00pm and Middle School faculty from 2:00pm to 3:00pm in the afternoon.
