Coach John Shuman and Jerry Miller discuss FUMA's PG football scrimmage this week at Ferrum, as well as how some FUMA alums like Josh Morgan, Billy McMullen, Jimmy Martin, and Phillip Merling are doing this preseason in NFL training camps. Three video segments:
Joe Ehrmann, an All-American football player at Syracuse University and professional football for 13 years, will address the Fork Union Military Academy Corps of Cadets on Wednesday, September 10th at 2:00 p.m. in the Wicker Chapel. His presentation will also be open to the community at 6:30 p.m. that same evening in the Beatty Library.
Mr. Ehrmann spent most of his professional football career with the Baltimore Colts. Following his football career, he matriculated at Dallas Theological Seminary and Westminster Theological Seminary where he was ordained in 1985. Starting in 1995, he became the Defensive Coordinator and Assistant Head Coach at Gilman School in Baltimore, where Parade Magazine found him and featured him on its cover as "The Most Important Coach in America" because of his ability to transform the culture of sports by reframing and redefining the social responsibility of coaches, parents, and players. He is also the subject of the New York Times bestseller Season of Life by Jeffrey Marx.
This dynamic speaker has visited FUMA before and is an inspiration for the cadets. The presentation is being sponsored jointly by the Payne Greater Issues Forum and the FUMA Parents' Association. He and his wife Paula founded Building Men and Women for Others as an organization to address issues of masculinity and femininity, and to redefine and reframe the social responsibility of sports, coaches, parents, and players, as well as addressing issues of violence and child advocacy. Mr. Ehrmann is also the co-founder of Baltimore's Ronald McDonald House, which has served over 35,000 families since its inception, and is a cause which has been adopted by FUMA cadets.
Mr. Ehrmann works with groups of people - young and old - to promote personal growth, teamwork, effectiveness, and individual responsibility. As a professional speaker, educator, trainer, and coach for over 25 years, Joe has become a champion of causes, change, and compassion. His life-changing seminars result from his own unique life experiences (including the death at too young an age of his brother who attended FUMA), practical strategies, and proven techniques.
VIDEO: Coach Shuman talks about pre-season progress
Coach Shuman took time to answer some questions about his new postgraduate football team, currently undergoing three-a-day practices in the hot August sun.
We asked Coach Shuman the following questions:
1. How is his team looking so far this year?
2. How are the guys holding up physically to the demands of pre-season?
3. How is are the guys dealing with the normal homesickness that strikes this time of year.
4. Who has stepped up early and stands out in practice?
We were on hand to catch a glimpse of the action as the PG football team ran through some rehearsals of their plays as their first scrimmage at Ferrum College draws near.
As listeners of the radio show "Shuman Says" may know, there are lots of former players who can imitate Coach Shuman's withering glare and incredulous tone as he asks "So...you want to play college football?"
We stopped by practice and recorded this collection of moments that might provoke just that question, were it not for the kinder, gentler Coach Shuman now leading the program! Enjoy the lighter side of football.
Noted author and educator, Dr. Robert Brooks, to speak at FUMA
The faculty and staff at Fork Union Military Academy have a national reputation for helping young men develop character, self-discipline, and achieve academic success. This week on campus, the teachers become the students.
Noted author, educator, and award-winning speaker, Dr. Robert Brooks, Ph.D., has been invited to provide staff development at Fork Union Military Academy this Thursday, August 21, 2008.
A psychologist on the faculty at Harvard Medical School, Dr. Brooks has authored (with co-author Dr. Sam Goldstein) ten books including "Raising Resilient Children" and "The Power of Resilience." Dr. Brooks' most recent book is "Raising a Self-Disciplined Child" published in 2007 by McGraw Hill. Dr. Brooks has an international reputation in his field and FUMA feels very fortunate to have a guest speaker of his stature provide staff training.
Dr. Brooks will meet with the whole school faculty and staff from 9:00am to 12:00noon on Thursday morning in the Estes Dining Hall, and then meet with Upper School faculty from 1:00pm to 2:00pm and Middle School faculty from 2:00pm to 3:00pm in the afternoon.
The Catholic Cadet Association will be collecting and "recycling" old eyeglasses this year for use by school children and their families in Fond Pierre, Haiti. St. Joseph's Church, where the Cadets attend Mass during the school year, has a twin parish there.
The CCA asks all cadets to stick a pair or two of old glasses in their luggage before heading out to FUMA. Both prescription and over-the-counter eyeglasses are being collected for "recycling." This is a small, yet thoughtful gesture, with countless benefits for the environment, our neighbors in need, and our Cadets.
For more information, contact the CCA Sponsor, Mrs. Lauren Taddei at taddeil@fuma.org or by phone at 434-842-4331.
