Prep Doubleheader Against Christchurch
The Blue Devils traveled to Christchurch on Thursday, April 24th for a doubleheader that they split winning the first game 15 to 0, but lost the second 10 to 7. In the first game, FUMA batters pounded out 14 hits while scoring 15 runs.
John Malley (3 for 3, double), Josh Brown (2 for 3, 2 doubles) and Sean Sweeney (2 for 4, 2 doubles) led the way as the Blue Devils had 7 doubles in all. Pitcher, Jay Billingsley only gave up 3 hits as the defense was perfect in his support. The second game was a complete reversal from the first game as the Blue Devils only gave up 3 hits but committed six errors. Cole Herod (2 for 3, double and a home run) and Sean Sweeney (1 for 3, home run) helped FUMA claw back to within three runs but we couldn't quite make up the gap.

Waverly Washington Recognized by National Football Foundation
Article from Charlottesville's Daily Progress, April 25, 2008
Fork Union Military Academy's Waverly Washington was one of 16 Central Virginia high school football players recognized this past Sunday by the Commonwealth Chapter of the National Football Foundation and Hall of Fame at its 10th annual Scholar-Athlete Banquet.
Washington, a captain and two-way starter at wide receiver and defensive back at Fork Union, earned All Prep honors on both offense and defense and was named a VISAA Division I all-state second team on offense. He was a second team All-Central Virginia pick on defense.
In addition, Washington has excelled in the classroom at FUMA, and has made only one grade below an A during two years at the school.
Washington was one of seven athletes at the banquet named a scholarship recipient.
Other players included Michael Callahan (James River-Midlothian), Dante Cook (Stafford), Chris Daly (Collegiate), George Garner (Benedictine), Jabrel Mines (Caroline) and Cameron Murray (Deep Run).
Washington, who is also a member of the track team at Fork Union, plans to attend West Point Prep School and then the U.S. Military Academy at West Point. He plans to play football and walk on in basketball.

Orienteering Travels to Rochester, NY
The team had a very good weekend and made excellent progress with this competition.
Friday the team traveled 10 hours to Rochester, NY and in the evening held study hall. This was necessary because we were going to miss the study period on Sunday evening due to the return trip. The hotel obliged us by allowing our cadets to use their breakfast room for our study hall. Thus, we had a period of supervised study (as we always do). Even away our cadets are following their normal routine.
Saturday was much warmer than expected as temperatures were in the 80's. The morning was the Middle Distance Championships. FUMA did well going up against their peers and three FUMA runners placed. Adam Welsh and Jon Snyder obtained a silver and gold, respectively, in the 17-18 year old bracket. Brad Baker garnered a silver in the 13-14 year old age bracket. John Delekto just missed a medal with a 4th place finish.
After a light lunch, cadets competed in the sprint competition. Two competitions on such a hot day was grueling, but well worth the training value. Cadets were able to apply what they learned immediately.
Once finished with the competition, we were able to enjoy some of the natural beauty of the area. Letchworth Park is one of the best kept secrets of New York State. It contains a deep gorge with three substantial waterfalls. If you think that all of youth are jaded in our computer age, you should have heard the "oohs" and "ahs" as we first drove along the gorge, and then stopped to walk and look at the scenery.
Needless to say the cadets were pretty tired by the time we got on the bus to drive to our motel. We went to the mall to get some supper, and then went to see the movie, Expelled, (a thought provoking documentary about the debate in the scientific world regarding Intelligent Design).
Sunday we competed in the US Relay championships. This was a lot of fun as the course setter put a few controls in the middle of a field so we could cheer on our teammates. Unfortunately for this one, we were competing against some of the top adult teams from the Eastern US and Canada, as well as the Military Academy at West Point. We came in dead last. Yet, as a coach, this may have been one of the most gratifying events for me. On our first team, 3 of the 4 boys were running courses above their age level. On the second team, two brand new orienteers went on courses that were well beyond their knowledge and experience and there were no complaints. The eagerness of the boys was equaled only by their perseverance as they moved through intricate, technical terrain. I was proud of their grit and focus. For photos of the event go to the FUMA Photo Gallery.

No break for FUMA against St. Chris this week
The pitching for Saint Christopher shut down the Blue Devils twice this week. On Tuesday, FUMA lost 8 to 1 and then being blanked out at Saint Chris in Richmond on Thursday 10 to 0. The pitchers for Saint Christopher bedeviled the FUMA hitters allowing only 5 hits in the two games. FUMA had a chance to score in the second game when Ryan Nolan doubled in the first but were unable capitalize on it. Cole Herod was also one for two, hitting the ball hard in his first at bat but was robbed of a single on a nice play by the pitcher.

Blue Devils lose to Collegiate in Prep Baseball
The Blue Devils had another tough outing as they lost to Collegiate 6 to 0 at Collegiate. Collegiate's pitcher L. Jung (signed with the University of Richmond) pitched a 4 hitter and was in trouble in both the fifth and sixth innings as the Blue Devils loaded the bases but were unable to push any runs across the plate. Drew Stout had a rough start over the first three innings but settled down and pitched very well the rest of the way besides adding a double in his last at bat. John Malley went 1 for 3 as did Sean Sweeney.

FUMA vs. Miller School - Prep Baseball
The Prep baseball team came from behind against The Miller School, scoring a run in the bottom of the sixth inning to move ahead 3 to 2 and win the ball game. Pitcher, Jay Billingsley went the distance picking up his second win while giving up only 2 runs. The Blue Devil defense played well giving up only one error and making several outstanding plays in the field. The winning run was scored by Andrew Stout who singled, went to second on a wild pitch, moved to third on a fielders choice and scored on an errant throw by The Miller School catcher.

Prep Baseball - Covenant defeats FUMA
In a game in which both teams had five errors, the Covenant School scored the winning run in the bottom of the seventh to defeat FUMA at Covenant by the score of 9 to 8. FUMA struck early gaining a 7 to 2 lead after four innings, but watched it slowly evaporate over the last three innings. Sean Sweeney pitched five strong innings and had a good day at the plate (3 for 4 and a double), but inconsistency ruled and the Blue Devils were defeated.
