Track 2008 Underway-3rd Place Finish at Fork Union Invite

The FUMA Track team began the 2008 campaign knowing they had one tough act to follow. If the month of January is any indication, the Blue Devils will do a fine job. The Blue Devils had a solid effort at the New Year's Opener at the Estes Center and returned a week later to rally to a third place finish at the 19th FUMA Invitational.

FUMA picked up a rare win in the 4x200 with a 1:35.9 effort. Leading the way in the relay was senior Chris Pride. The Nike All American put FUMA into the lead and Waverly Washington, Austin Ofoma and Marcus Dowtin never looked back. The win was a first for the Blue Devils in Invitational history. FUMA scored in eight of the fifteen events and earned a third place finish.

Scorers included; Marcus Dowtin (2nd Shot Put), Brian Zitterkopf (4th High Jump), Chris Pride (5th in 300), Austin Ofoma (3rd in Long Jump), Jeremy Haney (4th in 1600) and Patrick Hayes (5th in 3200). The 4x400 team of Caleb Haney, Jeremy Haney, Matt Anderson and newcomer James Steele closed out the scoring with a third place finish in the 4x400.

A week later the Blue Devils traveled to the "Pit" at VMI and successfully defended their Keydet Invitational win from a year ago. Leading the way were seniors Marcus Dowtin, Brian Zitterkopf and Jeremy Haney. Dowtin won the shot, Zitterkopf placed in two jumps and Haney won the 3200. Haney also anchored a rousing win in the 4x800 when he closed a 40 meter gap with a 2:02.5 clocking. The 4x200 continued its winning ways and the 4x400 nearly claimed a sweep of the relays with a second place finish.

One of the surprises of the meet was the performance of James Steele. Though new to the sport, the junior ran to a third place finish in the 500 in what is a very competitive event.
