Orienteering Heads to Georgia
Just west of Augusta, Georgia, Saturday morning dawned with a temperature of 44F and the temperature dropped for the rest of the day. In addition, there was a constant rain falling and this is an orienteering coach's nightmare! Kids are so susceptible to hypothermia in such conditions. In 2002, Georgia held a meet under similar conditions and a number of competitors had to be found in the forest and treated for hypothermia. We did not want that to happen to our cadets. Fortunately, we were aware of the weather predictions and were well prepared.
In addition to clothing, we set an upper time limit on the course of two hours. The USOF limit is three hours. Not all the boys finished their courses, but we had everyone back safely! Even the two hours they spent in the woods gave them invaluable training which will lead to further improvement.
We returned to the motel to warm up, had a bite to eat, and then reviewed the courses for the day. The review of our courses may be one of the most important things we do. It gets the boys to assess what they did right, and what they did wrong - an indispensable tool that transcends the sport of orienteering. They share thoughts, and give each other feedback. We had good discussions, and it appears the boys learned a lot, for their times improved greatly the next day. Sunday gave us weather with sub freezing temperatures, but it was sunny and dry. All the boys successfully engaged some difficult courses. For those who have been orienteering the entire year, we have seen a steady decrease in times as they become more accustomed to map reading, and learn to make good route choices from the experience they have gained.
