Soccer to Participate in Collegiate Valentine's Tournament
This season FUMA Soccer went 4-6-4. We put two players on the All-Prep team, Bob Hart, and Mike Jewell. Currently we have a player who is trying out for the Williamsburg USL Premier Development Team. This was Coach Wood's first season at FUMA. He is hoping to reestablish the soccer traditions at FUMA. The team is very grateful for the opportunity to participate in the indoor soccer tournament on February 8th at Collegiate starting at 5:15 p.m. We wish all the teams good luck.

Orienteering Heads to Georgia
Just west of Augusta, Georgia, Saturday morning dawned with a temperature of 44F and the temperature dropped for the rest of the day. In addition, there was a constant rain falling and this is an orienteering coach's nightmare! Kids are so susceptible to hypothermia in such conditions. In 2002, Georgia held a meet under similar conditions and a number of competitors had to be found in the forest and treated for hypothermia. We did not want that to happen to our cadets. Fortunately, we were aware of the weather predictions and were well prepared.
In addition to clothing, we set an upper time limit on the course of two hours. The USOF limit is three hours. Not all the boys finished their courses, but we had everyone back safely! Even the two hours they spent in the woods gave them invaluable training which will lead to further improvement.
We returned to the motel to warm up, had a bite to eat, and then reviewed the courses for the day. The review of our courses may be one of the most important things we do. It gets the boys to assess what they did right, and what they did wrong - an indispensable tool that transcends the sport of orienteering. They share thoughts, and give each other feedback. We had good discussions, and it appears the boys learned a lot, for their times improved greatly the next day. Sunday gave us weather with sub freezing temperatures, but it was sunny and dry. All the boys successfully engaged some difficult courses. For those who have been orienteering the entire year, we have seen a steady decrease in times as they become more accustomed to map reading, and learn to make good route choices from the experience they have gained.
Compliments of Carl Muench

Citadel BB Coach Praises FUMA's Program
In an article appearing in the Charleston, SC Post and Courier, Citadel head basketball coach Ed Conroy describes his 18 years of recruiting experience at Fork Union Military Academy and sings the praises of FUMA's basketball program and head coach Fletcher Arritt.

Prepped and ready: Fork Union a valuable stop for Citadel duo
By Jeff Hartsell (Contact)
The Post and Courier
Saturday, January 12, 2008
Twice a year, Citadel coach Ed Conroy makes a pilgrimage to the rolling hills of central Virginia, to the campus of a military school that sits on 650 acres in the middle of nowhere, halfway between Richmond and Charlottesville.
He goes to watch the basketball team at Fork Union Military Academy practice.
"I've been going up there for 18 straight years, at least once in the fall and once in the spring," Conroy said. "I like to go up there in the fall for one of their first practices to see how they look, and then go back in the spring because there's always at least one player who surprises me with how much they've developed."
Fork Union, founded in 1898, is a college preparatory boarding school and an increasingly popular stop on the college recruiting map. Conroy found two of his current Bulldogs, freshmen Austin Dahn and Phillip Pandak, at Fork Union, and at least eight current Southern Conference players put in a year at Fork Union before going on to college.
"That year is invaluable to all the players that go through there," Conroy said. "And to a man, they will tell you that. And the main reason is the coach up there."
That coach is Fletcher Arritt, who himself played at Fork Union and has been the team's coach since 1970. Arritt has sent 52 players to Division I colleges since 2000, including seven from last year's team that featured Dahn, Pandak and College of Charleston freshman Donovan Monroe. Arritt is the subject of a documentary film in the works called "The Passing Game."
"He's one of the best coaches in the country and a tremendous influence," Conroy said. "In their year under them, they become part of that program for life."
Dahn, from Columbus, Ohio, and Pandak, who is from Richmond, both decided to go to Fork Union to improve their skills and increase their chances at a D-I scholarship.
"My high school was not a big basketball school and I didn't get a lot of exposure," said Dahn, who has started all 14 games for the 5-9 Bulldogs and is averaging 10.4 points. "Fork Union gave me the opportunity to be seen by a lot of coaches."
Basketball is a year-round sport at Fork Union, with practices starting in August and finishing in May, long after the season has ended.
"Coach doesn't let up at all, even after the season is over," said Pandak, who is averaging 5.4 points off the bench. "He wants to make sure that from the day you get there until they day you leave, you get better every day."
Said Dahn, "My all-around game got so much better. Every day, we'd run ball-handling drills, shooting drills, passing drills. Then after the season is over, we scrimmaged for an hour and a half every day. It's pretty intense."
Fork Union also produces its fair share of football players, including names such as Vinny Testaverde, Dexter Coakley from Wando High School and Eddie George. And the school's military setting makes it a good stop for future Citadel cadets.
"It's definitely hard," Pandak said. "It's isolated from everything, out there in the middle of nowhere. But it helps you get a lot better. I'm glad I went there."

FUMA Alums Lead ASU to victory
Appalachian State University beat their previously unbeaten Southern Convference rival UT Chattanooga 92-83 in a game that saw outstanding contributions from three former FUMA cadets.
Donald Sims led the scoring with a season high 28 points, and added 8 assists and 7 rebounds. Donte Minter posted 18 points with his 8 of 11 shooting to place second on Appy's scoring totals. Jeremi Booth came off the bench to add his 2 points to the total.
With these three FUMA alums on App State's 15-man roster, and all three of them seeing playing time and scoring points, Appalachian State University will be a fun school for FUMA fans to follow this season.

Former Cadet Killed in Iraq
Just one week after receiving his promotion to Staff Sergeant, Jonathan Dozier, 30, of Chesapeake, VA was killed in combat during operations in Sinsil in central Iraq on Wednesday January 9, 2008. Dozier attended Fork Union Military Academy briefly as a sophomore between February and May of 1994.
Dozier, a sniper team leader, was one of six soldiers killed when an improvised explosive device was detonated in a building they had entered during combat operations. The soldiers were assigned to the 3rd Squadron, 2nd Stryker Cavalry Regiment, 1st Armored Division, Vilseck, Germany. Also killed in the blast was an Iraqi interpreter.
Dozier joined the army in 1997, then left the service to attend Middle Tennessee State University, re-enlisting in the army in 2005. He was a sniper team leader and was leading his men searching buildings for insurgents and explosives. House bombs are an ongoing threat in the Diyala province, and the house in which Dozier was killed had been cleared once of explosives just two weeks earlier. Diyala province was also the scene of earlier combat that injured FUMA alumnus SSGT Jonathan Grundy, now recovering in Walter Reed Hospital from a bullet wound to the face.
Dozier attended Fork Union Military Academy for the end of his sophomore year. He arrived after yearbook photos had been taken, so there is no cadet photo available at this time, but the photo below was the last picture he mailed to his father, Carl Dozier, from Iraq.

FUMA Alumnus Injured in Iraq
SSGT Jonathan Grundy, FUMA Class of 1994, was injured while serving in Iraq on December 11, 2008. A member of the 82nd Airborne Division serving his third tour in Iraq, SSGT Grundy was leading his men on combat patrol in the Diyala River Valley when he was struck in the face by a round from an enemy AK47 rifle.
His father provided the following details:
"The bullet cut across the upper nose and entered the left side of his face. It first shattered the orbital floor below his left eye, then hit the upper left jaw, fracturing it in, I believe, three places. In the latter area, it also cut the facial nerve on that side.
"The good news, as articulated by each surgeon who worked on him, was that the hit was 'a miracle'. Had Jon's head been turned just a half inch differently, he'd have lost his life. As it was, the damage was extensive, but he lived.
"The worst news was only discovered during his second surgery (the ENT surgery to rebuild his face was almost 11 hours, then the second surgery, by the eye team, went 5 hours the following day--all at Walter Reed). Blood in the eye had obscured the extent of the damage, and the eye team only discovered during their surgery that the hydrostatic shock of the round had, essentially, blown a hole in the lower rear of the eye. The eye could be saved as a living, but not a seeing, organ. As you can easily envision, this has heavy professional implications. Jon will never lead troops in the field again, and never jump out of airplanes again. He'll be facing a medical board for retention on active duty. He has some heavy decisions to make.
"The very good news is that his sense of humor is still there, and his determination. Apropos of humor, his first words to me after the wound were: 'Just wanted you to know, Dad, I'm not really trying to compete with Grandpa for Purple Hearts--he got four in WWII, but one's enough for me!'"

CPT James Benson, FUMA's Upper School Chaplain recently took a group of cadets for a visit to Walter Reed Hospital where SSGT Grundy is recovering from his injuries. SSGT Grundy remains in good spirits.
SSGT Grundy has accepted FUMA's invitation to take the review of the Cadet Corps during the full dress parade on Alumni Weekend in May of this year. "Passing in Review" is traditionally one of the highest honors the Corps of Cadets can offer, as the entire battalion marches past the reviewing stand in full dress, turning their heads to the reviewing stand to offer their salute and recognition to those taking the review.

Track 2008 Underway-3rd Place Finish at Fork Union Invite
The FUMA Track team began the 2008 campaign knowing they had one tough act to follow. If the month of January is any indication, the Blue Devils will do a fine job. The Blue Devils had a solid effort at the New Year's Opener at the Estes Center and returned a week later to rally to a third place finish at the 19th FUMA Invitational.
FUMA picked up a rare win in the 4x200 with a 1:35.9 effort. Leading the way in the relay was senior Chris Pride. The Nike All American put FUMA into the lead and Waverly Washington, Austin Ofoma and Marcus Dowtin never looked back. The win was a first for the Blue Devils in Invitational history. FUMA scored in eight of the fifteen events and earned a third place finish.
Scorers included; Marcus Dowtin (2nd Shot Put), Brian Zitterkopf (4th High Jump), Chris Pride (5th in 300), Austin Ofoma (3rd in Long Jump), Jeremy Haney (4th in 1600) and Patrick Hayes (5th in 3200). The 4x400 team of Caleb Haney, Jeremy Haney, Matt Anderson and newcomer James Steele closed out the scoring with a third place finish in the 4x400.
A week later the Blue Devils traveled to the "Pit" at VMI and successfully defended their Keydet Invitational win from a year ago. Leading the way were seniors Marcus Dowtin, Brian Zitterkopf and Jeremy Haney. Dowtin won the shot, Zitterkopf placed in two jumps and Haney won the 3200. Haney also anchored a rousing win in the 4x800 when he closed a 40 meter gap with a 2:02.5 clocking. The 4x200 continued its winning ways and the 4x400 nearly claimed a sweep of the relays with a second place finish.
One of the surprises of the meet was the performance of James Steele. Though new to the sport, the junior ran to a third place finish in the 500 in what is a very competitive event.

FUMA's Dowtin playing in prime time
Marcus Dowtin, a senior at Fork Union Military Academy, will be playing in the O-D All-American Bowl on Friday, January 4, 2008 in Miami, Florida. The game will be televised live by Fox College Sports (FCS) starting at 8:00pm. This will be the last football game played in the historic Orange Bowl Stadium.
This is the second-annual Offense-Defense All-American Bowl. A select group of 88 of the finest high school football players from across the United States will be divided into East and West squads. Dowtin, who has committed to University of Georgia, will play on the East squad coached by legendary ex-NFL wide receiver and current HBO football analyst Cris Carter.
The Offense-Defense All-American Bowl Selection Committee conducts and supervises the Offense-Defense All-American Bowl selection process. The committee is comprised of ex NFL coaches, scouts and players. The Selection Committee evaluates athletes across the country, starting with those who attend the Offense-Defense Elite Camps. The committee then proceeds evaluate thousands of the nation's top prospects during the spring and summer. The top 100 seniors in the nation are then nominated and considered for selection to the Offense-Defense All-American Bowl. Of the nominees, approximately 80 Offense-Defense All-Americans are selected and invited to play in the early January All-Star event. Offense-Defense All-Americans are selected during the Offense-Defense Elite Camp Tour, which takes place throughout the summer. All Offense-Defense All-Americans must be in good standing within their schools and surrounding communities.
