Orienteering North America Highlights FUMA

The November/December 2007 issue of Orienteering North America recognized two FUMA cadets, Adam Van Alstyne and Adam Welsh, and outlined "What They Did on Their Summer Vacations." Van Alstyne and Welsh, along with Coach Carl Muench, attended the USOF Convention in Colorado this summer. It was held at the Peaceful Valley Boy Scout Ranch attracting over 300 people from all over the world. The convention focused on orienteering training and provided clinics for athletes and coaches.

"I really enjoyed the convention and especially the training. It was very helpful and interesting. During the coaching clinic I received a Level I Coaching Certificate and feel I will be able to use these skills to help some of the new Fork Union Middle School Cadets who joined the team this year," states Van Alstyne in his summary.

Welsh states in the article, "I realized the importance of setting goals and training towards those goals. I will take what I have learned back to FUMA so that others may improve on their skills and techniques and become better orienteers."

The cadets and Coach Muench were able to attend the convention thanks to Junior Development grant money from USOF. Coach Muench concludes his summary by saying, "I enjoyed the orienteering, the scenery, and I learned so much. I think I enjoyed meeting and renewing acquaintances within the orienteering community, a fun, passionate, and playfully eccentric group of people involved in a wonderful outdoor sport."
