FUMA Wins State Championship in Cross Country

Led by Jeremy Haney's runner up finish, the FUMA Cross Country team destroyed the field at the 43rd Virginia Independent Schools Cross Country Championship on the Woodberry Forest course. The win marked the tenth time that a FUMA team has won the title, three more than any other private school. It was also the third straight state title for the team.

Haney ran with Potomac's Johns Ross for most of the race and finished a very solid second place and recorded the eighth fastest time on the course at Woodberry Forest. Haney was not the only story for FUMA. Senior Darren Simpson had a furious finish to claim third place overall and Junior Patrick Hayes was also in the top ten finishing sixth. Ivan Almekinders gave FUMA a fourth All-Virginia finisher with a 20th place and Caleb Haney clinched the championship with a 27th place. FUMA finished with a low score of 58 an incredible 51 points ahead of the runner up Norfolk Collegiate. Also having big days for the harriers were juniors Ford Fraley, Chris Stephens and Alex Green. Those three will be a big part of next year's title defense. Senior David Gudeman was easily the top seventh runner in the meet and would have made an outstanding fourth runner on any other team.

The Cross Country team got in the title winning spirit a week earlier when they cruised to the Prep League Championship at Collegiate School. Jeremy Haney won the title giving FUMA the individual champion in each of the last four years. Darren Simpson and Patrick Hayes both finished in the top 5 and Ivan Almekinders and Caleb Haney also earned All Prep League honors with top 15 finishes. FUMA won the title with 27 points, 41 points ahead of runner up Saint Christopher's.

The cross country team did a great job throughout the year. In five invitationals FUMA was in the top 3 four times. The average time for the team at the state meet was 15 seconds better than last year. The 2006 team was largely acknowledged as the best private school cross country team ever.
