FUMA Aviation Takes Flight

Fork Union Military Academy now has a program in place to teach cadets to fly. Jim Akers, former Admissions Director and retired Air Force Lieutenant Colonel, will be the point of contact for the program and will teach the ground school portion. Any student interested in the flying program is required to have a physical examination administered by an F.A.A. approved physician. A student must be 16 years old to solo and 17 years olf to receive a private pilot's certificate. Training can begin at an earlier age.

"I am excited about coming back and having the opportunity to teach this program to cadets. I donate my time as ground instructor because of my belief in the school, its mission and my love for aviation," states Lt.Col. Akers.

Parents of cadets that have shown an interest in flying will receive a letter outlining the costs of the course and other requirements. Anyone interested in finding out more about the program can contact him directlry at 434/842-6124.
