PG football falls to Navy 32-6
Coach Shuman's PG football team played three games within one week and almost started their season at 3-0, but Navy proved too quick and formidable in the second half of Wednesday's game at Annapolis, leading to a 32-6 victory for Navy over FUMA.
The first two quarters of the game looked promising for FUMA. FUMA's defense held Navy's option offense out of the end zone in an impressive stand early in the game and then blocked Navy's field goal attempt to keep the game scoreless. FUMA's offense was unable to produce many scoring opportunities in the first half however and the game continued a 0-0 tie until late in the second quarter when Navy put 6 points on the board. FUMA blocked the point after kick, leaving the door open for a FUMA comeback as the first half came to an end.
The second half was all Navy, however, as they jumped out quickly to put a touchdown on the board. Navy's speed and athletic ability was apparent as they were able to seize brief moments of opportunity to make big plays on both offense and defense, putting points on the board. The cracks in the armor of the young FUMA team, facing a Division I team for the first time, were exploited by the opponent and the game closed out at 32-6.
Overall, it was a positive showing for FUMA as they held their own against this Division I opponent for two quarters and looked as if they might be able to snatch an upset victory if their defense continued to hold the Navy team off the scoreboard as well as they had done in the first half. In the end, the experience and athletic ability of Navy carried the day.

PG team beats the heat as well as Canadian team
The thermometer read 100°F as the teams took the field this past Saturday at 2:30pm in the afternoon. The postgraduate football team was facing the Central Canada National Club team, but their biggest opponent might be the heat itself. FUMA's PGs not only overcame the humidity and heat, they bested the other football team by a score of 32-0.
The Canadians brought a big, strong team but had trouble making positive yardage against FUMA's swarming defense. The Canadians faced many 3rd and long situations throughout the day, with "long" meaning 25-plus yards. Their punter faced difficulty in getting the ball very far downfield in the heavy air, so the ball position game tended to favor FUMA, leading to the lop-sided result.
On defense, the Canadians made a number of good stops, hustling despite the oppressive temperatures, and forcing FUMA to work for every gain.
Overall, the FUMA team put on quite a good showing with effective running, passing, and screen plays - hopefully a harbinger of good things to come in the season.
The PGs face their first Division I opponent as they travel to the Naval Academy on Wednesday to face their JVs in a game that will likely feature a game speed the FUMA players have not yet experienced, often an eye-opener for FUMA players getting their first taste of a top college opponent.

Prep FB tops Fluvanna 41-21 in Foundation Game
Though billed as a scrimmage, the annual Foundation Game played between Fluvanna County High School and Fork Union has all the trappings of a major high school event. Crowds of people, bands, cheerleaders, and outstanding action on the field.
This past Friday night was no exception as FUMA continued its dominance over county rival Fluvanna, posting a 41-21 victory.
FUMA's team showed some great speed among its skill positions with quarterback Patrick Myrick, back Marcus Dowtin, receiver Chris Pride, and back Curtis Shannon all producing great results on the ground.
The line on both sides of the ball looked solid. Sophomore Mark Shuman made some impressive stops at defensive end, towering at 6'6" over all on the field.
Perhaps the most remarkable performance of the night came late in the game when Andy Tembon was put in the lineup at running back and kick returner. He had also been carrying the duty of kicker and place kicker throughout the night. Late in the game, Andy Tembon had the distinction of running the ball off right tackle into the end zone for a touchdown, remaining on the field to successfully kick the point after, and then being told to hustle back out on the field because he had to kick off. On the ensuing kick, the returner very nearly broke through the last tackler and it appeared that Tembon was going to have to make the tackle on the kick return as well, but finally he was able to take a well-deserved break to catch his breath.

Jacoby Ford continues to light it up at Clemson
The blazing fast Jacoby Ford (FUMA '06) continues to impress observers with his speed, but hopes to silence those who question whether his straight line speed will transfer into the football quickness to be successful as Clemson's starting wide receiver.

PG football team scrimmages Ferrum
The postgraduate football team traveled south to Ferrum to face-off against a college team in their first scrimmage of the season. Coach Shuman went into the scrimmage with a few specific objectives, most of which were realized successfully. Coach Shuman reports that the team met most of his objectives for the first scrimmage, including impressing him with their ability to "check" plays or change the called play quickly when faced with an unexpected defensive alignment. FUMA will face the Central Canada National team in their first scheduled home game this coming Saturday.

Phones and Power Down Temporarily
If you try to call FUMA and receive a busy signal, do not worry. Our electrical power was knocked out by thunderstorms on the evening of Thursday, August 16th, about 8pm. The power company expects service to be restored to all areas by Saturday night, hopefully sooner.
This means most of our phone service is down as well our internet access. Sports practices are still being held, our dining hall is operating on emergency generator power, and all students are safe and sound.
