FUAC kicks off long course season at the Hargrave Invitational

On Saturday, May 19th, Fork Union Aquatic Club (FUAC) swimmers competed at the Hargrave Military Academy invitational in Chatham, Virginia. FUAC sent 18 athletes to the meet ranging in age from 8 to 18. According to Jim Bocci, Head Coach and Aquatics Director, "This early season meet gave us the opportunity to gauge the success of our training while competing in a fun atmosphere." Coach Bocci said, "I am very happy with the results. We had several best times, along with some great early season swims. Our young men and women train very hard and smart. It's encouraging when they see the fruits of their labor."

Individual points in each event were awarded through 12th place. FUAC swimmers Lindsay Price (67 points), Dillon Hatch (45 points), Michelle Caron (91 points -- FUAC female high point scorer), Katie Wilson (78 points and two personal best times), and Jason Abel (52 points and one personal best time) brought home first place awards.

In addition to the numerous first place finishes, FUAC swimmers registered an amazing 39 top eight individual finishes. Standouts included Johnnie Hineman who registered personal best times in the 200 and 100 meter freestyle and 100 meter breast stroke events (45 points), Rachel Yellets who recorded personal best times in the 100 meter backstroke and 100 meter freestyle events (21 points), Jordan Benson who recorded a personal best time in the 100 meter backstroke (30 points), Rabecca Gardella who registered a best time in the 200 meter individual medley (39 points), Sito Arroyo who placed top eight in three individual events (59 points - FUAC male high point scorer), and Callie Price who placed top eight in two individual events (37 points). Other notable swims came from newcomer Chris Covington who registered a personal best time in the 100 meter backstroke (13 points), high school sophomore Jeremy Gencavage who placed 2nd overall in the 100 meter backstroke and 100 meter butterfly events (53 points), and Maggie Shefski who completed a successful meet with an outstanding four top six finishes (58 points, including a 2nd place finish in the 100 meter backstroke).

For FUAC swimmers Jason Abel, Cameron Duchene, and Bryan Halfpap the meet was bitter sweet. All three athletes are high school seniors at Fork Union Military Academy, and this meet marks the end of successful high school swimming careers for each of them. Jason, a Charlottesville native, will continue his swimming career at Duquesne University (PA), while Cameron is off to the University of Colorado and Bryan will attend Villa Julie College (MD) next year.

On June 16 - 17, FUAC swimmers will travel to Winchester, VA, for an invitational. Fork Union Aquatic Club is a USA-Swimming team open to the public for membership and for swimmers from novice through elite ability level.

FUMA wins State Track Championship for 20th year in a row

On Saturday, May 19, 2007, the FUMA Track Team made history by winning the VISAA State Championship in track for the 20th year straight. Since 1987, the track team from FUMA has dominated the state meet, and this year FUMA cruised to a victory with 179-1/2 points. Woodberry Forest placed second with 94 points.

The team features Polish-born phenom Axel Mostrag, the National Champion in the 800-meters, but FUMA's victory was truly a team effort. FUMA captured the title in all three relay races and claimed six individual state champion titles.

The Challenge - Final Stage of FUMA's Capital Campaign

On May 4, 2007 an anonymous benefactor promised Fork Union Military Academy a $1 million gift, on the condition that the Academy raise the remaining $3.9 million needed to reach the campaign goal of $29 million. In order to receive this gift the amount of $3.9 million must be raised by July 1, 2007.

The alumni, friends, parents and grandparents of Fork Union Military Academy have been given a challenge. This is the final stage of our campaign to "Secure the Promise" for our future cadets. Every new gift received between now and July 1, 2007 - whether for annual giving, scholarship support, or capital projects (your first gift or an addition to your previous support) - helps us meet this challenge deadline. It will enable the Academy to end the campaign early and complete many of the needed projects on campus.

In the upcoming weeks, a mailing will be sent to all FUMA constituents and we encourage you to read this information and please consider helping us meet our goal. For more information on how to make a gift to the Academy, go to Support FUMA or contact the Development Office at 434/842-4370. Now is the moment we need everyone to step forward. Even a small gift or pledge will help.

Jr. Prep vs. Covenant

FUMA hosted Covenant yesterday. FUMA kept the game close with a good complete game from Edell on the mound. Edell had little run support and lost the game 4 to 3. The FUMA team showed little enthusiasm and failed on several opportunities to win this game against a weaker opponent.
