National Merit Commended Scholars
Juniors Chris Fraser and Brian Zitterkopf have been designated as Commended Scholars by the National Merit Scholarship Corporation. Based on their October 2006 PSAT scores, these Cadets placed in the top 2% of all eleventh graders in the state of Virginia. The National Merit organization will now move to the next step in the process by selecting students for Semi-Finalist designation in October 2007. Good luck to both of our Commended Scholars in the next phase.

Official Race Results - Fork Union 4-Miler
Sponsored by the Fork Union Village Project
April 28, 2007
Thank you for joining us for the third annual Fork Union 4-Miler!
Prizes are awarded to the top three men, the top three women, and the top three men and women in each age category: 15 and under, 16-19, 20-29, 30-39, 40-49, 50-59, 60-69, 70+. All prize winners will be notified separately.
Due to computer program compatibility challenges on race day affecting persons with the same last name - which we sincerely regret - the results may have changed.
Please notify the committee at 434-842-4227 or hitchca@fuma.org, if there are any questions about the posted results.
We hope you enjoyed spending a beautiful day with friends and neighbors and, again, thank you for supporting this volunteer community run. Congratulations to all 136 finishers! Full results are listed below.

Jr. Prep vs. Woodberry Forest
Yesterday the Junior Prep team traveled to Woodberry Forest to a rematch game. While the game was very close until the last inning, FUMA came out on top 8 to 4.
FUMA got on the board early with a two run homer by Thomas Eddins of Green County, VA. The game went back and forth with both teams having opportunities for big innings, but the defense of both teams kept it close. The team used three pitchers in the game to keep arms healthy and to keep the other team off balance. Justin Edell started the game, followed by Russell Bodine. Finally, Taylor Germain closed the game out. In the 6th inning we took a one run lead, then in the 7th inning the bats began to ring and the victory was sealed.

Rola wins Volunteer track Classic
Fork Union senior Szymon Rola had a splashing debut in the 2000 meter steeplechase in Friday night's portion of the Volunteer Track Classic at the University of Tennessee. Rola won the race in six seconds with a final time of 6:19.99. Rola's time is only five seconds off the national qualifying time in the event for Nike Outdoor Nationals, but the qualifying time is insignificant to Rola as both Fork Union teammate Axel Mostrag and Rola will be headed back home to Poland at the end of the May and jump into the track championship meet series there. Mostrag competes in the 3200 meter run later this evening with current state leader Peter Dorrell of Blacksburg (9:10 best), while Fork Union will be loading up their outstanding 4x800 meter relay on Saturday in Knoxville.

Jr. Prep vs. Collegiate
The Jr. Prep baseball team hosted Collegiate on Thursday, April 19th. The score was 10 to 6 in favor of the visiting team. WThe team played fairly well except for one inning which allowed Collegiate to score 8 or 9 runs. The Blue Devils finally settled down and played a good game. Coach Brian Haney says he sees improvement in this team and he expects a better, final run to the end of the season.

Sydney Johnson (FUMA '93) named new Princeton head basketball coach
Congratulations to another FUMA alumus whose success story began here...
Sydney Johnson, who played here for Coach Arritt in 92-93, has been named the new head basketball coach at Princeton.
Johnson was a four-year starter and three-year captain of the Princeton basketball team following his postgraduate year at FUMA -- the only 3-time captain in Princeton history. He was named Ivy League Player of the Year in 1997 when the Princeton Tigers went undefeated in Ivy League competition.
He played professional basketball in Europe before returning to the states to accept an assistant coaching position at Georgetown where he has coached the past three years. Johnson helped coach Georgetown to a Final Four this season.

Ransone's Run: John Ransone Describes the Experience
Just five months ago, John Ransone sought to raise money for FUMA's track program by staging Ransone's Run. COL Ransone, a FUMA alumnus and longtime faculty member, ran from the FUMA campus to the Ragged Mountain Running Shop in Charlottesville - a distance estimated at that time to be 37 miles.
Well, he's done it again.
On Saturday, April 14, 2007, John Ransone completed the second Ransone's Run, this time running from the Ragged Mountain Running Shop back to the FUMA campus, arriving in the middle of the huge Gus Lacy Track Classic being held on campus. And this time, when he actually looked at the odometer of the support vehicle that paced him the entire route, he discovered that the distance actually measured nearly 42 miles, not 37 as originally thought.
Over $2,000 in cash and pledges has been raised so far by this effort -- money that is desperately needed as funds are being raised to resurface the indoor track facility on campus. Nearly $280,000 is needed to undertake this project and the resurfacing is sorely needed in this heavily-used venue.

COL Ransone is seen here at the conclusion of his run with owner of the Ragged Mountain Running Shop, Mark Lorenzoni.
In his own words...
We asked COL Ransone to write down some thoughts about his experience that day, and this is what he had to share:
Having done this run before, I decided to run the other way, that is from C'ville to FUMA. I thought (incorrectly I might add) it would be down hill and much easier. I also believed that since Gilly Clough would be running the whole way with me, it would be easier. Wrong again!
Since Winston Brown would be running the Gus Lacy Invitational Track Meet, I needed someone else to drive the support car with our drinks, goo, and other clothes. We started off at 6AM in front of Ragged Mountain Running Shop, where we left a thank you note taped to the front window. Lori Wagner, driving the support car left us and drove to the three mile point. We planned to drink every three miles and eat goo every six miles. Gilly had a great deal to say as we had about 30 years of catching up to do.
The first three miles when by very quickly and I became concerned that we were running too fast at a 9 min. 10 sec. pace. Gilly laughed and started on another story. It was somewhere about here that it started raining. Running in the rain. Well, we were already running so there was no real reason to stop, at least Gilly and I could not think of one.
The next three miles seemed so easy that I too started to believe we were not running too fast. Even though the three mile runs came and went quickly, the twenty-one miles to Scotsville didn't. It seemed to take forever to reach Carter's Bridge which I thought was only 10 miles south of C'ville. Gilly was much faster on the hills and I would have to pick it up to catch him on the down side.
Somewhere around Kiene, Gilly started telling me how I lied to him about being down hill. I was very surprised at how much up hill we ran. I did not remember that much down hill running the other way back in Nov. It was only close to Scotsville that we noticed long down hills to run.
When we reached Scotsville, it was raining rather hard. Gilly changed into some dry clothes. I could not see the point. I taped a thank you note to Dr. Biers Dentist's office for his donation to the run and another to James River Reeling and Rafting, as they were a main sponsor of the first run. Then it was the long steep hill run out of Scotsville.
No sooner had we started than Fletcher Arritt drove by in his Audi TT sports car. We turned around and headed back to meet him in hopes that he was going to run some with us. Nope! However he did turn around and as he passed us, slowed down, rolled down his window and said, "Ransone, Al Ivens says to remind you that you have duty tonight". Is Fletcher a good friend or what? Gilly ran away from me on that hill. By the time I reached the top, I began to wonder if I would make it to FUMA.
The next drink stop was where I showed how tired I was. Let me remind everyone that somewhere between 17 and 20 miles we had used up all the stored "food" in our muscles. The goo was trying to replace it but we were using it also. My body was trying to figure out what was going on. Why was I still running when my muscles did have any "food" to operate on?
Now the miles really started to seem longer, much longer. The run was no longer fun and I was really having to concentrate on just moving my legs. Was it the cold and rain, had we run the first 20 miles too fast, was I too out of shape, or was I just too old to do this long a run. It quickly became the hardest thing I have every done. And every step became harder. I am glad that no one offer me a ride as I do not believe I could have kept running.
Somewhere about 7 miles from FUMA, I had to walk some. My stomach was in such a state that I could no longer eat goo. You would have to do this run at 59 years old to understand. Fletch drove beside us as much of the time as he could due to traffic. Lori became worried about me and called her mother for advice as to what to do. Gilly and I walked some and ran when we could. Even he started to have a hard time running.
With every mile I knew we were closer, but I was at a point that closer was no relief, I needed the end and I needed it badly. I concentrated harder on moving my hurting legs and the hope of finishing this (by now) insane run. I wanted to run more and walk less, but the tired mind, weak being, and hurting legs made me walk more and run less.
At long long long last, we could see FUMA and when we pushed on until we arrived at the track. As soon as I stopped running, I was stunned at how good I felt and how quickly I started recuperating. I stayed at the meet to watch the pole vault after I thanked and said goodbye to Gilly and Lori.

No words can express the sympathy and grief that we feel during this tragic time. It is a reminder of the pain our nation has suffered many times before - the events that have shaped our country and become a part of history.
Only history books, autobiographies and letters share the pain and sorrow many before us have gone through during tragic events, wars, natural disasters and attacks on our freedom. Now we have radio, television, cell phones, computers and a vast wave of technology that brings us the information in the midst of an event.
We must look at all the information and choose for ourselves what is most important during a time like this. We must remember that our faith and our inner strength will lead us to carry on and know in our heart what needs to be done to offer help and guidance to those who have suffered during tragedy.
We cannot dwell on blame and "what if." It will not change "what is." It only deepens our sorrow, shatters our heart, and damages our soul. We must look in ourselves and believe that God is our only judge.
Let us pray for the families, the Blacksburg community, the friends of the victims, and all who have been touched by this tragedy. Look around and see that the nation is reaching out to show its support and love.
The rest is left to Him.

Four Middle School Cadets are Johns Hopkins Scholars
For many years Johns Hopkins University has conducted a nation wide search to identify academically talented young people. Students who scored at or above the 95th percentile on a nationally normed achievement test are invited to participate in the search. These students then take the January SAT and/or ACT exam right along with high school seniors. We were delighted to have ten middle school students eligible to participate in the search this year.
By scoring above the national average for college bound seniors, Davey Brackett, Tim Gaylor, Nate Richardson and Adam VanAlstyne were named Hopkins Scholars for the 2006-2007 school year. The highest congratulations are in order to these fine students. For photos go to FUMA Photos.

FUMA Jr. Prep Baseball vs. Fluvanna
FUMA played Fluvanna last night in a cold drizzle but that did not dampen the spirit of the Fork Union team. Justin Edell started on the mound for FUMA and gave the team four very solid innings. Stephen Maltrotti relieved him and had two good innings that kept the team in the game. With great hitting from both sides and some good defense as well, the game was tied going into the bottom of the 7th inning. Fluvanna scored on a squeeze play with one out to win the game 9 to 8. Notables at the plate include: Russell Bodine with a home run; Tyler Anderson with a ground rule double; and Stephen Maltrotti going 2 for 2 with two singles.

Mostrag Struggles, but FUMA finishes 2nd at Arcadia
Axel Mostrag did not have the race that he had hoped for in California as he finished seventh in the invitational mile (a field of 14) at the Arcadia Invitational in a time of 4:14.80. Mostrag ran boxed in lane 1 for the majority of the race and race winner Michael Chinchar was able to build enough breathing room on the competition before the final lap to hold for the win in 4:09.67. Mostrag did not have his customary deadly kick down the stretch as he finished behind a pack of others following Chinchar. Nonetheless, Mostrag's time is a state leading performance thus far this spring.
Quite impressive for Fork Union to run a DMR without their 3:52 1500 meter stud in Axel Mostrag and still run a sub 10:20 time as they did at Arcadia with the team of Jamie Reichlen, Curtis Pride, Jeremy Haney, and Szymon Rola with a runner-up time of 10:19.22. No word on splits yet, but it is likely that Rola had to have gone under 4:20 for Fork Union's 1600 meter anchor leg to have finished less than two seconds off their Nike Indoor Nationals time in which Axel Mostrag split a 4:11 on anchor.

FUMA played at Saint Christopher's in a cold wind. FUMA started with Russell Bodine on the mound. He did a good job after the first inning, the mound was about 2' high and that took some time to figure out. Thomas Eddins relieved Bodine for the last two innings and pitched very well. The team played pretty good defense against a team that hits very well. Our bats failed to score enough runs to stay in the game. Saint Christopher won this contest 7 to 2.

Last Orienteering Meet of Year
"I think I can say that we had a fun time this weekend," states Carl Muench. "The boys acquitted themselves well, finishing 6th out of 11 varsity teams. It was not our best finish ever, but considering the health and experience level we brought to the meet, I was very pleased." The Orienteering Team traveled to Fair Hill, MD this weekend for the National Championship.
Aleks Peterson spearheaded the effort. He finished 9th overall, but this does not show the entire perspective. Places 3-10 were less than 4 minutes apart after 13 km through the woods and 2 days of competition. Aleks was right up there with the best.
Running on sore knees, Dale Helm had a gutty performance placing him 17th overall. He was a great inspiration to all the guys on the team. John Warren was our third runner. As a sophomore at his first interscholastic event, he kept his wits about him and gave a very credible performance.
Kyle Pape completed varsity courses both days. Kyle has been at the sport less than a year. He has made remarkable progress. Adam Welsh completed varsity courses as only a freshman. His improvement and growth has also been wonderful to watch.
On the Middle School front, Adam Van Alstyne finished 12 of 39 competitors in the Intermediate category. This is very respectable, especially since Adam is a 7th grader and the most of the field is 9th graders.

Phonathon to Continue Again Tonight
The cadets will be hard at work on the phones again this evening, Monday, April 2nd. They are trying to reach the goal of $100,000. On Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday, for the past two weeks, the team has been diligently calling alumni and parents asking for donations to help our Annual Giving Fund at the Academy. Many of the cadets have heard some amusing stories from alumni and they have thanked each and every individual that has given to this fundraising event.
So far, the team has received $92,916 in pledges and the money has started coming in with $26,815 received to date. A total of 550 parents and alumni have supported our cadets during the Phonathon. The Development Office wishes to thank our donors for their participation.
It is also a competition amongst the cadets to see who has the highest total each night. So far the top three cadets have been Cadets LaCour, Atassi, and Yonce. Each of the team members deserves a pat on the back for their hard work every night. For photos go to FUMA Photos.

Cadets prepare Blankets of Hope
Blankets of Hope is sponsored by Soldier's Angels. Recently each company at FUMA purchased a blanket to decorate and send to our wounded soldiers in Iraq. The Echo Company actually purchased four blankets to prepare for the military overseas.
Bev Hanlin, Community Coordinator at FUMA, helped organize this project for the cadets and Suzanne Grant, wife of Bob Grant, was kind enough to embroider each blanket with Fork Union Military Academy and the name of each company. The cadets then signed their names and some even wrote messages to the soldiers. The blankets will be sent to California where they will be packed into back packs and distributed in Iraq. "We hope that these blankets will be a comfort to the recipients and we all hope and pray that there will not be a need for too many of them," says Mrs. Hanlin. "The students of FUMA were excited about this project and we are very proud of them for their participation."
Photos of the blankets are posted on FUMA Photos. Anyone wishing to purchase a blanket can do so by going to www.soldiersangels.org and clicking on Blankets of Hope.

FUMA Faculty & Staff in Richmond's 10K Race
"Some came to win. Others came for fun. And plenty of the 25,023 people who ran or walked the Ukrop's Monument Avenue 10K made somebody proud." (Excerpt from Richmond Times Dispatch)
Of those 25,000 people, 5 were participants from Fork Union Military Academy - Lynn Armstrong, John Ransone, Matt Donohue, Melissa Barber and Dick Washington. They ran in the Richmond Monument Avenue 10K on Saturday, March 31st. Lynn Armstrong, FUMA Librarian, won her age group. These members of the faculty and staff are very active and participate in many races throughout the year. It wouldn't suprise us if we even saw them (among many others) in the upcoming Fork Union 4-Miler on Saturday, April 28th.
For more information on the 10K go to Richmond Times Dispatch.
