Swimming & Diving Finishes Season with Outstanding Performance

The FUMA Blue Devil Swimming and Diving Finishes Season With Outstanding Performance at High School State Championship and USA-Swimming Regional Championship. Fork Union Military Academy finished 12th out of 41 teams at the High School State Championship on February 16th and 17th. Despite losing Will Trainor (currently attending UVA), the top scoring Senior and swimmer of the meet from last year, FUMA managed to register impressive swims from underclassmen and unheralded swimmers, catapulting them again to one of the top teams in the state.

Along the way the men smashed the current 4 X 100 freestyle relay team record by 13 seconds (Abel, Calhoun, McAfee and Hedges), placed in the finals in all three relays, had two divers score in the top 12, and had individual swimmers qualify for 9 individual events.

A week after the State Championship, 14 cadets traveled to the USA-Swimming Region Championship in Lynchburg as part of the FUMA USA-Swimming club team, Fork Union Aquatic Club. Eleven of the 14 cadets made finals in the grueling three day meet. In total, FUAC brought 25 swimmers to the meet, and managed to bring in more then 50 top eight finishes in individual events.

FUMA Band at Military School Band Festival

This past weekend, the FUMA band participated in the 31st Annual Military School Band Festival. Cadets from military schools from Wisconsin to Indiana to Kansas to North Carolina to New York were represented. There were approximately 125 students in attendance.

FUMA was well represented with two cadets earning 1st chair positions: Min Kim on trumpet and Micah Evans on alto sax. The final concert consisted of the six songs the students had been working on all weekend. The final selection was the theme from Pirates of the Carribean. FUMA's cadets also had solos.

A highlight of the concert was a Jazz band performance which included serveral bandmasters playing their instruments. Chief Patterson played guitar. It was great to watch the Jazz band.

FUMA has an excellent band and choir! Way to go guys!

Jacoby Ford ('06) Sets ACC Record in 60 Meter Dash

Jacoby Ford ('06), now a wide receiver for the Clemson Tigers, ran a 6.53 in the 60-meter dash during qualifying for the ACC Indoor Track & Field Championships being held at Clemson, setting a new ACC record.

Not one to rest on his laurels, Ford then ran a 6.52 the following day, breaking his own record. Ford's time is the fastest in the world this year.

Ford came to FUMA as a PG and was not heavily recruited as a high school football player. While at FUMA, he showed exceptional speed and skill at wide receiver and kick returner and set the benchmark for the 40-yard dash during his combine here with a time of 4.12.

Many schools recruited Ford during his time at FUMA and Ford joined the Clemson Tigers in the spring of 2006.

Middle School Mardi Gras Celebration

The Middle School French and Spanish classes observed Mardi Gras on Tuesday, February 20th with an after-dinner celebration in the Estes Dining Hall. The French students acted out the fable of the Crow and the Fox, as rhymed by La Fontaine. The Spanish class sang "La Bamba," made famous by Rudi Vallee. They also got together with Upper School language faculty and sang "A La Claire Fontaine," a traditional French song. The Dining Hall staff provided three beautiful platters of French petits fours, and faculty children in attendance did their part to add to the cheerfulness of the occasion.

The following morning, Lindsay Nolting (Middle School French & Art teacher) happened to snap a picture of some students as they reflected on their Mardi Gras effort. Pictured above Cadet Thomas 0'Connell with Ben Leonard (left). Cadet Leonard remarked after the photo was taken: "Ms. Nolting, for fourteen years, I have managed to keep my dignity, and now look what you have done!"

Red Hatters Remember Soldiers

Remembering our soldiers - That is what the the Fluvanna Red Hat Society is doing by sending a blanket for a wounded soldier. The Fluvanna Red Hat Society is a group of ladies that are over 50 who like to have fun and is mostly comprised of FUMA employees. The Red Hat Society is an International Organization and you see them every where you go because they are so easy to spot in their purple dresses and red hats.
redhatters_blanket.jpg

The Fluvanna Red Hat Society got involved with the Soldiers' Angels organization which reaches out to our soldiers abroad. One such project is putting together backpacks for the soldiers that are wounded. The blankets can be made from kits or they can be purchased already made.

The Red Hat ladies at FUMA made their blanket from a kit and embellished it with what else? Red Hat items! "The project was fun to do," says Queen Mother of the Fluvanna Society, Bev Hanlin, "but the reality of it is that this blanket may give some comfort to a wounded solider. We are all mothers and we made this blanket with the same love that we would have for our own child." The Red Hatters ask God's blessing on each one of our troops and hope that one day soon these blankets will not be necessary.

As Community Coordinator at FUMA, Mrs. Hanlin is organizing the Corps of Cadets to assist with the same project. They have collected money to purchase 7 of these blankets to decorate. If one is interested in making such a blanket, more information can be found www.soldiersangel.org. Click on Blankets of Hope.

Local Art Association Presents FUMA Cadets and Teacher

Fluvanna Art Association Presents
FUMA Teacher/Student Show

Cadets in Fork Union Military Academy's Middle School might feel they know everything about each other by the time 2nd semester rolls around. After all, most of them are boarding students and spend a lot of time around each other. In the school's art studio, however, the cadets continue to discover unsuspected abilities both in themselves and others:

"Who did that?"
"Smith."
"Smith, D. or Smith, J.?"
"Dave Smith."
"Dave Smith! Who would have guessed?"

The boys' teacher, Lindsay Nolting, says the conversation above is played out, with name changes, about twice a week as students view each others work in art class.

A lifelong painter, Ms. Nolting will exhibit her acrylic landscapes side by side with "an appealing and eclectic selection of my students' work" at the Community Center in Fork Union, March 2 through April 30, 2007. The show opens Friday, March 2 with a public reception from 4 to 5:30 p.m. The Community Center is located in the former Fork Union Elementary School, 5725 James Madison Highway. The Nolting/FUMA exhibit is part of an ongoing series organized by the Fluvanna Art Association in partnership with Fluvanna's Department of Parks and Recreation.

Fluvanna Middle School cadets have been perennial prizewinners in Old Farm Day/Heritage Trail art shows locally. Their teacher's recent credits include participation in "Particular Places", in New Haven, Connecticut, an exhibition curated by Bernard Chaet, Yale Professor Emeritus of Painting. A large Nolting landscape painted from the Columbia boat landing will tour Virginia in a group show on the theme of the James River. A drawing she made during a 2005 sojourn in southern France as a Virginia Center for the Creative Arts International Fellow is on view in the 2007 National Drawing Exhibition at the College of New Jersey. In late March Nolting will serve as juror for the 10th Annual National Show at the Montpelier Center for Arts and Education. This is the seventh year she has taught at Fork Union Military Academy Middle School.

Summer Session at FUMA Helps Students Get a Step Ahead

Summer Session at FUMA Helps Students Get a Step Ahead in the Competition for College Admissions

The competition for college admissions has never been tougher, as more high school age students are applying to college today than ever before. This means that, with more high-achieving students applying to the same top quality college programs, it's even harder to be admitted to highly selective schools than in past years. Students need outstanding high school transcripts and scores.

Fork Union Military Academy was founded in 1898 to give young people an opportunity to prepare for the best possible college education, and that mission remains unchanged today. For decades, local high school students have turned to the Summer Session at the Academy to improve their transcripts, learn better study skills, and increase their academic achievement. Today, more than ever, the Academy is working to meet the needs of college-bound students during its annual Summer Session to be held in July.

Top Quality Transcripts Are Key
Even a top SAT score or an outstanding personal interview is not enough to guarantee college admission if a student's grade transcript is weak. Colleges want to see that students have challenged themselves in the types of classes they have taken. Taking advanced courses, especially in math and science, can demonstrate that a student can handle college level classes. Even those students planning to major in the liberal arts or other non-technical fields should plan to complete four years of math and science to strengthen their transcript and give them a leg up on the competition.

Fork Union Military Academy offers a variety of courses, including advanced courses not traditionally found in public summer schools. Content areas include English, History, Foreign Language, Mathematics (including Algebra, Algebra II, Geometry, and Trigonometry), Science (including Chemistry), and Computer Skills.

Students can take one new class (140 hours) and add a college preparatory course to their transcript with just four weeks of intensive study. Adding that Trigonometry or other advanced course grade to a transcript can really help a student gain an edge on the competition. Alternatively, those students seeking to improve their grade in a core course may repeat two classes (70 hours each). The Academy's small class sizes and individual attention can help a student turn a "C" on a transcript to an "A" - provided the student is willing to apply himself and practice good study habits. Achieving outstanding grades in rigorous course work is a key to college admission.

Focus on Achievement, Not Remediation
While many summer school programs are designed to provide remediation for failing students, the emphasis at Fork Union Military Academy is on improving academic achievement and helping students gain admission to top colleges.

Nearly 100% of students who attend Fork Union Military Academy for four regular academic years gain admission to the college program of their choice. The Academy knows what college admissions offices are looking for in top quality students - the Academy has been producing such students for more than a century.

Fork Union Military Academy applies that experience to its four-week Summer Session (held this year from July 1 to July 28, 2007). Students learn effective study methods and live in a safe and structured environment. Study time is mandatory and supervised. Instructors offer high levels of individual attention. Students are expected to apply themselves, practice self-discipline, and focus appropriately on their academic goals. It is this recipe that has produced success stories for generations.

Athletic Mini-Camps
In addition to academic excellence, the Academy has established a national reputation for outstanding athletics. During this year's Summer Session, FUMA will be offering Mini-Sports Camps for two hours each day. These "Mini-Camps" will meet 6 days a week and will feature conditioning, basic skills review, strength training and live scrimmages. Each camp is designed for the student athlete and follows the same structure as our full school year athletic programs. The camps offered will include Football, Swimming, Distance Running, Baseball, Basketball, and Wrestling, as well as Weight lifting, Tennis, and Racquetball. All of the "Mini-Camps" will have access to our state-of-the-art facilities and are coached by FUMA's own coaching staff. The coaches include Micky Sullivan (7 time VISFA Coach of the Year), John Shuman (FUMA's PG Football Head Coach who has developed more than 55 future NFL players), and Winston Brown (Head Track Coach who has led our team to 19 consecutive Outdoor Track Team Championships).

SAT Preparation and Leadership Training
A non-credit course in SAT Preparation is also available for students seeking to improve their test scores. A Leadership Class will offer an elective 1/2 credit course that can be taken with one repeat class or SAT Preparation class. This class will cover the principles and foundations of Leadership. There will be a focus on the Servant Leadership model.

More information about Fork Union Military Academy's Summer Session can be found online at the school's Web site at http://www.forkunion.com/summer. You may contact the Admissions, 1-800-GO-2-FUMA or by email at maceks@fuma.org to request brochures and admissions information for FUMA's Summer Session program.

Mostrag magnificent in the 1000 meters

Axel Mostrag posted the nation's 9th fastest time EVER for a high schooler in the 1,000 meters this past Saturday at The Armory in New York.

from Milestat.com
Fork Union senior Axel Mostrag had to prove himself this weekend as the best in the 1000 meter field at the Collegiate Games. Lionel Williams from New York had run under 1:20 for 600 meters this year and Lamar Davis from North Carolina had the fastest returning 800 meter time in the country of 1:50.58. Along with other quality runners in the race, no win would come easy for Mostrag, but it certainly looked that way in the way he finished the race.
Mostrag started off the race near the back of the field of ten. By the time the bell lap rolled around, the Polish native found himself tucked behind Lionel Williams, who had led throughout. As they entered the backstretch of the final lap with under 180 meters, Williams left room for Mostrag to pass and the Fork Union senior took full advantaged as he trucked it around the track to win convincingly in 2:26.11. Mostrag's time is US #9 all-time and is the second fastest ever by a Virginian with only national record holder Alan Webb with a faster time at 2:23.68.

In more of an impressive show of Fork Union's depth in the middle distance events as well as a stronger indication of what their 4x800 meter relay is capable, Fork Union's Szymon Rola also competed in the 1000 meter with the state's second fastest time of 2:30.54 to finish eighth in the race. Both Mostrag and Rola knocked off teammate Jamie Reichlen, who had held the state's fastest time of 2:32.14 from St. Christopher's last weekend. Fork Union now has the top three 1000 meter runners in the state.

Indoor Track at St. Christopher's

Courtesy of Brandon Miles, www.milesplit.com

The Fork Union boys showed a glimmer of the performances they are capable of on a fast track on Friday, January 19 at a quad meet hosted at St. Christopher's School in Richmond. Their top four distance runners each won a race with Axel Mostrag in the 3200 meter run, Szymon Rola in the 1600 meter run, Jamie Reichlen in the 1000 meter run, and Jeremy Haney in the 1000 meter run.

Mostrag, coming off his 4:17 meter meet and facility record breaking performance in the 1600 meter run at last weekend's Fork Union Invitational, showed his range by clocking a personal best 3200 meter time of 9:29.93. The Fork Union senior won in a virtually solo effort as he finished 36 seconds ahead of the next finisher in Matthew Richardson of Collegiate (10:05).

Meanwhile, Polish buddy Szymon Rola also had a runaway victory at St. Christopher's in posting a personal best time of 4:23.01 to finish 18 seconds ahead of teammate David Johnson (2nd, 4:41.01). Rola's time hints at a strong possibility of Fork Union coach Winston Brown having two sub 4:20 milers on his squad soon than later.

Coach Brown already has three proven sub 2:00 800 meter runners and sub 2:40 1000 meter runners with Mostrag, Rola, and senior Jamie Reichlen. Reichlen cruised to a 2:39.55 victory in the 1000 meter run on Friday evening.

The more long distance geared of the bunch at Fork Union in Jeremy Haney, showed some wheels in a 500 meter dash win of 1:10.69.
