New Warning System Installed at FUMA

In its ongoing effort to provide a safe living and learning environment for cadets, Fork Union Military Academy recently installed an integrated lightning prediction and warning system on campus. The apparatus is manufactured by Thor Guard. Inc., and is able not only to detect actual lightning activity, but more importantly to predict the likelihood of lightning activity occurring within the campus vicinity. By measuring electrical energy in the local (as far away as 15 miles) atmosphere, the Thor Guard System can accurately track weather cells as they approach the FUMA campus. If lightning is imminent or likely, a powerful alarm will generate a 15 second warning blast that can be heard from any direction within a half mile.

The alarm system will help alert faculty, staff and cadets of any approaching storms that have the potential to produce lightning. It measures electrostatic potential around FUMA in all directions up to 7 miles away. If dangerous electrical activity is headed in the direction of the campus, when it gets to within 2.5 miles or so, the alarm will sound a single 15 second blast. Once the danger is past, the alarm will sound three 5-second blasts separated from each other by 5 seconds. On Wednesday, November 8th the alarm sounded because of a cell moving through Buckingham.

The cadets at the Academy have been informed of the system and how it works. Residents within a half mile vicinity of the Academy could potentially hear this alarm when sounded. Any questions relating to the alarm can be addressed to Todd Giszack, Assistant to the President at 434/842-4231.
