Cadets Compete to Aid Needy Families
Company competitions are a regular feature of life within the Corps of Cadets at Fork Union Military Academy. Having the cleanest barracks, fewest demerits, and best drilled cadets can earn extra leaves and other privileges for the young men in the winning company. However, one of the fiercest fights was waged this past month with canned soup and other food items - and needy families throughout the area will be the real winners.

Cadets at Fork Union Military Academy donated 4,660 pounds of food items to the Thomas Jefferson Area Branch of the Blue Ridge Area Food Bank Network this week. For the past month, cadets have been collecting non-perishable foods for donation to the local food bank. The cadet company donating the greatest quantity of food receives points toward the Winning Company for the Year honors. This year's food drive winner was Charlie Company, with Alpha Company and Band Company taking second and third place finishes.
Last year, the Academy's cadets held a food drive between October and January and donated approximately 1,300 pounds of food to the local Food Bank. This year, because increasing demand is putting pressure on the Food Bank's current supplies, the Academy ended the food drive early to get the supplies to the Food Bank in time for Christmas needs. Despite the much shortened time for the food drive, cadets responded with nearly four times as much food this year. The administrative hallway of Hatcher Hall was crowded with hundreds of cases of canned and packaged foods throughout the month of November.
"I was so impressed with last year's result," says Beverly Hanlin, the Academy's Registrar and Community Service Sponsor, "but I'm almost overwhelmed by the enthusiasm and effort shown by our cadets in this year's food drive."
On Tuesday, November 28th at 9:30am, the truck from the local Food Bank arrived to transport the supplies away. Cadets from each Upper School company and the Middle School helped load case after case of food.
Elizabeth Hamm, Branch Manager of the Thomas Jefferson Food Bank, reports that the more than two tons of food donated by the cadets will provide 3,641 meals to families in the community.
